Main Square of Kranj (German Krainburg) This square is the heart of the old town. Town houses with beautiful portals stand around it. The current image of the town centre was created in the 16th and 17th centuries, when bourgeois architecture reached its aesthetic peak. The fountain in the northern part of the square is a reconstruction of the fountain from 1837 and it stands in the same place as the first fountain from the 16th century. Prešeren Monument of Kranj On December 28, 1952, a 5-meter-high bronze statue of the greatest Slovenian poet was erected on the main square, between the Church of St. Kancian and the Prešeren Theater. It is the work of sculptors Frančišek Smerdu and Peter Loboda. It was erected under the watchful eyes and instructions of Jože Plečnik and Josip Slavec, who were designing the arcades on the facade of the theater at the time. In 2011 the library moved to the Globus building, a former department store. The premises had to be converted to suit their needs and so a new glass facade was combined with the original Corten steel panels and one of the most beautiful libraries in Slovenia was created. Not only the exterior but also the interior of the municipal library is extraordinary. From the ground floor to the second floor, the spaces are well thought out and organized depending on the activity to which they are dedicated. The book collection is wide-ranging and suitable for all ages, but there is also a large number of films and lots of music. A variety of cultural and informative events also take place here.
