Executed and designed by Sousa Caldas and Lieutenant Alberto Ponce de Castro in 1934. It was built specifically for the Colonial Exhibition, which opened in June 1934 at the Crystal Palace. It consists of an obelisk topped with the national coat of arms; at the base, six stylized sculptures symbolize the figures to whom the colonizing effort is owed: the woman, the soldier, the missionary, the merchant, the farmer, and the doctor.

The Porto Cruise Terminal is located in the port of Leixões in Matosinhos, approximately 10 km north of Porto city center. It is located on the port's south pier. It is operated by APDL - Administration of the Portos do Douro, Leixões and Viana do Castelo. The berth is approximately 340 m long and has a water depth of approximately 10 m, allowing for fairly large cruise ships to dock, with a length of approximately 300-320 m. The spiral design of the building is architecturally striking. The terminal building also houses CIIMAR, an interdisciplinary marine research and training center of the University of Porto.
