Tips from the Community

Stenio Melani
June 24, 2026, Praia de Carcavelos

Praia de Carcavelos is the largest and most famous beach on the coast connecting Lisbon to Cascais. Located about 20 kilometers west of the Portuguese capital, it is a stretch of golden sand about 1.5 kilometers long, world-renowned as a surfer's paradise and for its lively atmosphere. Surfer's Paradise: It is one of the most important spots in Portugal. Thanks to the constant waves of the Atlantic Ocean, it attracts both experienced surfers and beginners throughout the year. Clear but Cold Water: The water is very clean as it is located immediately after the estuary of the Tagus River. Being open ocean, the water temperature is always cool (ranging between 14°C in winter and 18°C in summer). The Historic Fort: On the eastern side of the beach stands the imposing Forte de São Julião da Barra. Built in the 16th century to defend the entrance to Lisbon, it is today the official residence of the Minister of Defense.

The Fort of São Julião da Barra (formerly called the Fort or Tower of São Gião) is the largest and most complete military defense complex in the Vauban style remaining in Portugal. It is located in São Julião da Barra, at the tip of São Gião, in the westernmost part of Oeiras, in the parish of Oeiras and São Julião da Barra, Paço de Arcos and Caxias. Considered in the past as the Shield of the Kingdom, it is the largest maritime fortification in the country. Originally, together with the Fort of São Lourenço do Bugio, with which it cooperated, it had the function of controlling the entry and exit of vessels at the mouth of the Tagus and access to the port of Lisbon. It is currently the official residence of the Minister of National Defense of Portugal. (Source: Wilkipedia)
