From Gasenried or Grächen through a larch forest to the “Alpja” (Schafalp). In early summer, thousands of alpine roses bloom around the alp! From the Alpja, continue on the marked hiking trail to the Ried glacier. The easy, flat glacier crossing is marked with reflective poles every 20 meters (only if the hut is manned). Then the path climbs again briefly until you arrive at the hut. Please inquire about the conditions for crossing the glacier, bring crampons!

Parking spaces at the entrance to Gasenried. There are 4 places available, which are reserved for the guests of the Bordierhütte.

The hut has 44 beds with duvets, please bring a sleeping bag.

Bietschtal Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Bietschtalbrücke is a railway bridge of the Lötschbergbahn (BLS) on the so-called southern ramp. It spans the Bietschbach gorge at a height of 78 meters and is 136 meters long. The steel bridge was built between 1910 and 1913, the steel parts were only connected with rivets, not welded. Technically, mastering the forces in the curved track layout (radius 300 meters) with simultaneous incline was particularly demanding.

On the Südrampenweg, the bridge can be crossed on a side footbridge, a shorter route variant. The circumnavigation on the slightly longer path that leads further into the gorge (Via Alpina route) is particularly impressive, but requires a minimum of surefootedness and a head for heights.

The hiking trail along the southern ramp of the Lötschbergbahn (BLS) is walked in the classic way from Hohtenn to Brig, in two to three days. A particularly beautiful section is the path from the Bietschbachtal with the Bietschtalbrücke to Ausserberg. Wide views over the Rhone Valley, famous for the rich flora and fauna with its sub-Mediterranean character. In addition, the bisses, water intakes and the railway with its bridges, tunnels and auxiliary structures. You can spend a lot of time there.

The path is well marked and cannot be missed. Again and again information boards on the building history and landscape as well as rest areas (e.g. Riedgarten), flyers with maps at the train stations. Difficulty level T2.

Luogelkin Viaduct

Highlight • Bridge

The originally single-track bridge was also widened when the Lötschberg railway was expanded to two lanes in the 1980s, recognizable by the narrower component without the beam supports for the arch construction of the old bridge.

I was lucky enough to marvel at more, less, or all of the viaduct as the clouds drifted by, changing the view every second. It's truly impressive what they built back then, given the circumstances. 👌🏻 There's a picnic area above.

Great view of the Riedgletscher and the Nadelgrat, a cozy hut and an incredibly friendly hut team! The hut access was renovated in 2023 and is now marked in red and white and no longer leads over the glacier.
