Beautifully maintained resting place at exactly 1000 m above sea level. Spring water is also drinkable. (No notice "Not for drinking")

The Sternstein is 1125 m high and is located in the municipality of Vorderweißenbach. It is the highest elevation in the central Mühlviertel. The Sternsteinwarte, built in 1899, invites you to take a panoramic view from Bohemia to the Alps.

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the spring catchment. No idea whether it is open or closed and therefore also suitable for drinking water. I no longer drink from open spring catchments, where all kinds of animals can frolic in them. The place invites you to take a break - it is well placed and beautifully done. There are several mountaineering routes in Hinterwald, primarily located in the Bezirk Rohrbach region. Our guide features five distinct routes, offering a mix of easy and moderate challenges through forested hills and to observation points.
Yes, Hinterwald offers routes suitable for beginners. For instance, the Sternstein loop from Sternstein is an easy 3.6 km trail that takes just over an hour to complete, featuring gentle elevation gains through the local forest.
Many of the mountaineering routes in Hinterwald are circular, allowing you to start and end at the same point. A popular option is the 1000-Meter Spot – Sternstein Observation Tower loop from Sternstein, a moderate 9.4 km path offering varied terrain and views from the observation tower.
The routes in Hinterwald often lead to observation points, such as the Sternstein Observation Tower, providing panoramic views over the forested landscape. You can also explore interesting natural features like the Mushroom rock in Silberhartschlag on its dedicated loop trail. Additionally, the region is home to highlights like the Helfenberger Hut, which can be a great stop along your journey.
The easy routes in Hinterwald, characterized by gentle elevation gains through woodlands, are generally suitable for families. The Sternstein loop from Sternstein is a good example, being relatively short and less demanding.
While the guide focuses on general mountaineering, the forested hills and moderate elevations of Hinterwald suggest that spring, summer, and autumn are ideal. These seasons offer pleasant temperatures and clear paths for exploring the region's trails. Winter mountaineering would require specific gear and awareness of snow conditions.
For those seeking a moderate challenge, the Sternsteinhof – Sternstein Observation Tower loop from Sternstein is a 7.6 km trail that takes about 2 hours 25 minutes, leading through forested areas and past the Sternsteinhof. This route offers more varied elevation changes compared to the easier loops.
Beyond the routes themselves, you can discover several points of interest. The Helfenberger Hut offers a place to rest, while the Granitlandrunde Trail – Stone Circle of the Shamans and the TraumArena Trail and Granitlandrunde provide additional exploration opportunities within the region.
The mountaineering routes in Hinterwald primarily traverse forested hills with moderate elevations. You can expect a mix of ascents and descents through woodlands, offering varied terrain that ranges from easy paths to more challenging moderate sections.
While the featured routes are primarily day trips, the region's extensive network of trails, including the Granitlandrunde, suggests possibilities for combining routes for longer excursions. For multi-day treks, consider linking several trails or exploring the broader Bregenzerwald area, which is known for its alpine pasture hikes.
Winter mountaineering in Hinterwald, particularly in the Bezirk Rohrbach region, would involve navigating snow-covered trails. While specific conditions vary, it's essential to be prepared for colder temperatures, potential ice, and deeper snow, especially at higher elevations. Always check local weather and trail conditions before heading out in winter.
Yes, if you're looking for more advanced alpine climbing, the broader Hinterwald region in Austria, particularly the Hinterer Bregenzerwald, offers significant challenges. Destinations like the Zimba (2,643m), often called the 'Matterhorn of the Rätikon,' provide demanding rock tours for experienced alpinists. The Hochmaderer area also features alpine climbing tours of varying difficulty.
