Large-scale nature conservation project Senne and Teutoburg Forest In the west of Lippe there is a biodiversity hotspot: The Senne and the adjacent Teutoburg Forest, with their characteristic habitats, species and populations, are one of 30 "treasure chests of nature" nationwide. For this reason, in 2003 an area in the vicinity of the Stapel military training area was funded as a large-scale nature conservation project (NGP) with federal and state funds. After the funding phase ended at the end of May 2020, the project was transferred to the sponsorship of the Lippe district. In recent years, the approximately 1,800 hectare project area, which stretches across Oerlinghausen, Augustdorf and Lage to Detmold, has already been carefully transformed. The project employees have secured relics of the traditional natural and cultural landscape and gradually made them accessible to the public. For example, they thinned out the forests and, in the long term, converted them into site-appropriate deciduous forests.
