The first mention of Nieszawa comes from 1230, when Konrad I of Masovia donated the town to the Teutonic Order. But then Nieszawa was located in a place that is today called Mała Nieszawka and is located a few kilometers west of Toruń. It was in this place that, for the first time on Polish soil, seven Teutonic knights under the command of the later national master, Herman von Balk, settled on the Vistula River. This stronghold was the seat of the southernmost commandry of the Teutonic State. Around 1300, the Teutonic Knights built a fortified castle there, which was demolished in 1424. As a result of the turbulent history of history, in just over 200 years Nieszawa changed its location twice, moving almost 40 km up the Vistula to the place where it is currently located.
