Even people from the Stone Age knew this, and they used this method to make their way through dangerous moorland. The moor adventure trail in Ahlenmoor is based on this millennia-old tradition. The circular trail leads around two kilometers through a varied natural landscape on wooden plank paths and paths made of wood chips. The starting point is a large information board opposite the Flögeln campsite. You walk through various landscapes between birch trees, moor grass, blueberries and cotton grass. At 14 stations you will receive information about the flora and fauna of the moor. Fold-down boards and pictures to look at give an impression of the special nature of the natural area and why it is so endangered. Drainage, peat extraction, agriculture and settlement have led to a sharp decline in raised bogs. The remaining remnants - which also include the Ahlenmoor - are now heavily protected. Wild horses and ancient cattle as landscape conservationists Today, grazing animals are used as landscape conservationists in the Cuxhaven coastal heath. The general aim here is to keep the landscape open. The habitats of the open landscape, the heaths and sandy grasslands are becoming increasingly rare due to our farming methods. Without grazing, a forest area would emerge here over time. In the area of the former military training area in the Altenwalder Heide, wild horses (Koniks), Heck cattle and bison are also used for this purpose. These large mammals live semi-wild in large fenced paddocks. The animals are only fed by the caretakers in exceptional cases. Visitors therefore do not need to be afraid of a direct encounter. However, the pasture enclosures are also so large that it may not be possible to spot any animals at all. Unfortunately, we were unlucky in this regard at the bison enclosure and did not see a single bison. These large animals are of course one of the main attractions in this area. There is a developed car park near the large pastures and you can walk directly to the animals from there. This is more than enough for a short Sunday stroll. If you like, you can of course explore the entire heathland on a long hike. In addition to the farm roads that are necessary here and still date back to military use, there are also numerous small winding paths. Koniks - a pony breed from Poland The Konik originally comes from Central and Eastern Europe. The ponies are very robust and are now often used in landscape maintenance. Unfortunately, it is not really a wild horse. However, genetically it is said to be very closely related to the Tarpan, the extinct European wild horse. The Koniks are said to come from former wild horse populations that were also hunted. Whether these horses were real wild horses or just feral domestic horses is still unclear today. Some of these wild animals were distributed to regional farmers in the Zamość area. Due to the poverty of the farmers, the horses were kept with very little human care. As a result, they remained very robust and proved themselves as working and draft horses. During the world wars, they played an important role in transporting troops as Panje horses. Due to their originality, the Koniks quickly attracted the interest of breeding researchers in Poland and also in Germany. The brothers Heinz and Lutz Heck at Konik also tried to breed the Tarpan back. The result was the Heck horse, which is said to resemble the extinct Tarpan.
