Three Brothers Rocks

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Three Brothers Rocks on Rudolfstein are an impressive demonstration of the power of nature. Through weathering, the granite masses have been finely honed over millennia and are now forming a work of art that often reminds of stacked mattresses. Waldsteinburg (Red Castle)

Highlight • Castle

Opposite the Waldsteinhaus, there is a rock wall on which the remains of the Waldstein Fortress can be seen. The fortress is also known as the Red Castle because it was believed that the roof has been covered with red tiles since it was built in the 14th century. However, this is not entirely true. It was only in the War of the Spanish Succession in 1701 - 1714 that the roof was covered with red tiles for the first time. Remains of it can still be found around the ruins.

September 1, 2024, Waldsteinburg (Rotes Schloss) Ruins

Right next to the Waldsteinhaus rises a mighty rock face containing the remains of the surrounding walls of the former main castle, the "Red Castle." Stone steps through the castle gate lead to the inner courtyard, which formerly housed various buildings (a gatehouse, a residential tower, and a cistern). The castle was built in the 14th century by the Lords of Sparneck; it was destroyed by the Swabian League in midsummer 1523. In the summer of 2024, the "Red Castle" was renovated and is now open to visitors again.
