Tännig Sand Dune

Highlight • Natural Monument

The dune of golden beige sand that suddenly appears in the forest was probably once a sand hollow.

Mountain bike tour with some of my most beautiful single trails in the Schweinfurt area.

The tour begins in Schweinfurt Höllental and leads uphill to Dianenlust via a long single trail. Once at the top, it goes downhill again on a fast single trail next to the forest path. After a short but steep ascent, it goes along the single trail next to the Mainleite back to the Höllental. From there the tour goes in the direction of the city forest. After a short gravel descent you can drive down the descent to the Hans-Nickel bridge, a beautiful single trail with steep curves. If that is too dangerous for you, you can also use the gravel path to the left of the trail. After the Hans-Nickel bridge we continue (of course via single trails) to Zell. In Zell we drive over the dam in the direction of Fichtenbusch. The Fichtenbusch Trail is a long and narrow hiking trail with many roots (Fully equipped bike is advantageous here). Once at the top, head towards Hesselbach. From Hesselbach you drive over asphalt to Ottenhausen.Von Ottenhausen it goes over gravel roads up to the Gandalmenpfad. Down the Gandarmenpfad, across the meadow up a steep single trail to the Ottenhäuser quarry. Now it goes downhill on gravel paths to the single trail Ottenhäuser Grund which ends in Hausen near Schonungen.

At the Wichtelhöhlenhütte (Witch Cave Hut), there's a lovely seating area with benches, perfect for a short rest. If you take your time, you can not only enjoy the view of the rock formations, but with a little luck, you might also hear the birds chirping in the quiet forest. Ideal for a quick break with provisions before continuing on.

In the Tännig valley, east of Grafenrheinfeld, a small dune field is located in an extensive former mining area of Pleistocene drifting sand. Westerly winds deposited the sand in sheltered areas during the cold periods of the last 2.6 million years. The most striking dune is accessible via a hiking trail (Auenwaldweg) that runs directly past it. Two larger sand outcrops exist. The dune and its surroundings are under special protection as a protected landscape feature.

Very fine sand - and a lot of it! It's a bit surprising when you're walking through the forest and suddenly you're standing on a dune. The mystical-looking roots make for some great photo opportunities.
