Coming from Mte Lego, a great Vrb trail to the Sentiero Collina Alta or to then whizz down to Brione sM. S3. Short video: https://youtu.be/-ADu8iED7Zs?si=nhF4V5qYcVUinvMS

After the Rasa Trail https://www.komoot.com/de-de/highlight/133646, after a little refreshment in the grotto of Rasa, this trail (Rasa-Bordei) follows. You absolutely have to keep left at the first junction (Bordei is signposted). It is very difficult to ride at the beginning, if not impossible. But then (as cadillac55555 mentioned before me) it gets a lot better, even wide and flowing - a lot of investment has been made, improvements made and made safer...

Since I took the partially drivable hiking trail from S2 to S3 as a shortcut (50% drivable), I can only speak for the second part of this route. Machines were used to work on the path here and from my point of view it is now only an S1 at most! Which was a very welcome innovation.

This point is an obligatory stop, because it is really worth it, for hikers who have decided to take the beautiful Tamaro->Lema crossing or vice versa Lema->Tamaro 😊

Can you see the Verzasca dam on the right? The opening scene of James Bond Goldeneye was filmed there. I'm referring to Pierce Brosnan's 300m deep bungee jump. In the film, the location was sold to the viewer as Belarus. Now you know better.

Monte Tamaro really rewards the hiker for his effort. The view is amazing. This was my second time doing this hike. It requires a lot of fitness and sure-footedness. I start this tour from Monte Lema and finish it via Alpe Flopa in the Riviera and then return by bus. Our tour was not overcrowded, few hikers came towards us (July)

The Ascona-Locarno region offers incredibly diverse terrain, making it a mountain biking 'Eldorado'. You'll find everything from steep, technical trails winding through thick chestnut forests to flowy natural downhill tracks, grassy slopes above Lago Maggiore, and routes along granite gorges and emerald rivers. This variety caters to all skill levels, from beginners to advanced riders.
While Ascona itself doesn't have traditional bike parks with extensive infrastructure, the Cardada area near Locarno provides a similar experience. It's accessible via cable car and offers flowy natural downhill tracks. The S3 Trail Cardada–Sentiero Collina Alta Connection is a popular challenging trail in this area, featuring larger stones, ledges, and flowier sections.
For experienced riders seeking a challenge, the region offers several demanding trails. The Crest Trail Section (Route 201 Monterecchio–Passo Forcora) is known for its technical sections with pointy stones and large roots. The Carbon Trail Entrance also leads to a challenging trail, with sections that are 30% technical and 70% flowing. Additionally, the Corona dei Pinci MTB Loop is a difficult 40.4 km trail with significant elevation gain, offering epic views of Lago Maggiore.
Thanks to its mild climate, the Ascona-Locarno region is ideal for mountain biking almost year-round. Even when other parts of the Alps are still covered in snow, you can often find excellent riding conditions here, making it a flexible destination for cyclists.
Absolutely. The region is renowned for its breathtaking scenery. Monte Tamaro is an extreme vantage point, offering panoramic views of Lago Maggiore and the surrounding valleys, and on clear days, you can even see both the lowest and highest points in Switzerland. Many trails, including the Corona dei Pinci MTB Loop, also offer stunning vistas of Lago Maggiore and the alpine wilderness.
The Ascona-Locarno region is very bike-friendly. Many hotels cater specifically to cyclists, providing services such as personalized route advice, workshop facilities, and bike wash stations. There's also a dedicated 'Trail Crew Ascona-Locarno' that ensures trails are well-maintained and new ones are continually being developed.
Yes, while many trails are challenging, there are options for all levels. The region's diverse terrain includes routes with varying degrees of technical difficulty, ensuring accessibility for families and those seeking less extreme rides. For example, the Tenero, Arcegno e Trail del Riale Brima is a moderate 10.2 km route through the Arcegno area.
Beyond mountain biking, the Ascona-Locarno region offers a wealth of outdoor activities. You can explore numerous MTB trails, enjoy road cycling routes like the 'Cycle paths between Locarno, Tenero and Ascona', or embark on hiking adventures such as the 'Grand Tour of Lake Maggiore: Ascona - Ronco Loop' or 'In the woods of Arcegno'.
Visitors frequently praise the variety and quality of the trails. Many appreciate the challenging nature of routes like the S3 Trail Cardada–Sentiero Collina Alta Connection, noting its exciting mix of technical and flowy sections. The stunning panoramic views from spots like Monte Tamaro are also a consistent highlight, making every ride a memorable experience.
Yes, the region is home to several highly-rated singletrack trails. 'Lucertole' is a popular blue difficulty alpine singletrack primarily used for downhill. Another favorite is the 'Passerotto Trail', also a blue difficulty singletrack. These trails offer exciting experiences for those looking for dedicated singletrack riding.
For trails winding through picturesque valleys and offering alpine scenery, explore routes in Vallemaggia and Valle Verzasca. An example is the 'Lago di Palagnedra ed i Trail di Rasa – giro ad anello', which provides beautiful alpine views and passes through charming local villages, offering a cultural and scenic riding experience.
