Spronserjoch – Sopranes Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Spronserjoch (2591 m)
The original path from the middle Etschtal near Meran to the high valley of Pfelders dates back to the Middle Stone Age (around 5000 BC). The Mesolith station near the nearby Kaser Lacke is evidence that this mountain region played an important role in early times. The counts of Castle Tyrol had their own alpine pastures and hunting grounds in Zeppichl and Lazins.
For centuries, the dead of Pfelders were carried over the Falschnaljöchl (2417 m) and the Spronserjoch to the cemetery of the original parish of St. Peter in Gratsch for burial. Hunters, shepherds and smugglers knew of the advantages of this hidden crossing. Folk tradition claims that Pfelders was settled from the Etschtal.
Today, the scenic beauty of this region is protected and plays an important role in mountaineering.

At 2,455 m you reach the end of the saddle and have a wonderful view of the Langsee. The ascent to this point is difficult, steep and often exposed. Better not to do it in bad weather. The climb is only recommended for hikers who are free from giddiness and sure-footed. Going up is easier than going down, because then you don't always have the depth of the fall in mind.

Eisjöchl Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

I also strongly recommend starting the tour from Pfossental. Almost everything can be ridden for fit bikers. Car in Meran, Schnalstal, Pfossental, via the Stettinerhütte to Moos im Passeier and back to Meran ... 90 km and approx. 2600 m.

Falschnaljöchl

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Ascend from Pfelders via the Lazinsertal and descend through the Faltschnaltal. At the Jöchl you have a wonderful view of some of the Spronser lakes. Duration about 5 to 6 hours without rest. You can also descend on the Jöchl to z. B. to get to the Langsee. Refreshment Oberkaser (good food) 1 hour additional walking time. The tour from Pfelders to Hochmuth near Dorf Tirol is also recommended. Walking time about 7 hours without a break. Good condition is a prerequisite. No noteworthy difficulties along the way. Mostly not walkable before June due to snow.

Timmelsjoch Pass (Merano to Sölden)

Highlight (Segment) • Mountain Pass

Starting from Sölden, it starts with a full ascent, to the destination Timelsjoch (23 km) I would like to say that you need a very good basic level of fitness for the 1430 m.
The temperature differences should not be underestimated, we had great weather but only had 13 degrees on the Timelsjoch.
When you arrive at the toll station, you might think that you have reached your destination, unfortunately this is not the case. After the toll station it's first 2km Berab and then another 5-6km up to the Timmelsjoch at 2509m.
You can also see the route and think that this has only a slight incline, but you will be taught better.
The descent to Meran with 51km downhill is mega and unforgettable, the pass with 31km goes very steeply downwards and the last 20km to Meran on bike paths drops very gently to the destination.
Be sure to take bike lights with you as there are many tunnels that are partially without lighting.
A sensible windbreaker jacket is also a must, because when you arrive at the top completely sweaty and sometimes go down at 60Km / h it gets pretty cold,
especially in the tunnels that also drip from the ceiling.
Since this is a very popular pass and therefore also very busy,
Especially by motorcyclists, this is sometimes pretty tight in their overtaking maneuvers. It is best to plan the tour during the week and not on vacation periods.
Otherwise a lot of fun and good ascents and descents.
Greetings Marcus

Hello, does anyone know if the Spronser Joch is currently accessible (June 21, 2025). Thank you for a quick message.

We were one of the first groups in the gap on July 18, 2024, as there is still a lot of old snow this season and the hut owner had previously advised against it. Conclusion: it works well, the chain is free of snow, crampons are helpful. The newly built steps make the north descent much more pleasant.

June 25, 2024, Taufenscharte

When we visited in June 2024, the path was heavily marked by the effects of winter. Some parts had slipped and were badly torn up by fallen rocks. It was still possible to walk it, but it was a little more difficult than usual - it's steep either way!
