It was just a guide stick for bad weather, stuck in the ground, but it didn't give up, took root, and (re)became a tree.

"The Cheile Tătarului is a natural reserve, in the Gutâi Mountains, located on the territory of Mara village, Desești commune, in Maramureș county. This tourist attraction was included in the -III- category of the National Union of Nature Conservation. The Cheile Tătarului stretch on an area of 15 hectares and the gorges themselves are 700 meters high. They represent a gorge, formed by Igniș-Mara, in pyroxenic andesites. The two slopes are different, one being covered by forests and the other, rocky and vertical. Cheile Tătarului nature reserve is declared a protected area, by Law no. 5/6 March 2000. Runcu stream flows through the gorge." https://www.directmm.ro/comunitate/turism/cheile-tatarului-din-maramures-singurele-chei-de-andezit-din-romania/

A wonderful summit for an all-round view. The ascent from Blidari is easily accessible by bus and takes about 3 hours. The descent to Baia Mare to the Strada Taul Rosi is very steep and only recommended for experienced hikers who are in good physical condition. https://www.komoot.de/tour/1206394977?ref=avs&share_token=a6jJPYzYk0uyvxJFqdHYiSmIJxdK59WUjZxsaSI0y2T8s4kbne

Less frequented than Rooster Creature, offers a superb panorama. In some areas, junks have grown on the pavement, long pants help to avoid scratches. Generally, it is more exposed to the wind than Rooster's Creature, some wind-protective clothing helps.

A classic weekend route in the area, you will not miss people to greet :) Easy ride, at least until the last part, which is quite steep but relatively short. There is generally no water on the route (there are springs but rarely enough flow). You can meet with sheep stallions, leave a little space to not upset the dogs (or make sure the shepherds see you to call the dogs). GSM signal with intermittent, often roaming Ukraine.

Munții Gutâi is a volcanic range, so you'll encounter distinctive geological formations like andesite rock structures and remnants of ancient volcanic craters. Key features include dramatic peaks, deep gorges carved by streams, and unique wetland ecosystems. For example, Cheile Tătarului Gorge is notable for being the only andesite gorge in Romania, while Rooster’s Ridge is a spectacular andesite formation resembling a giant rooster's comb.

Munții Gutâi offers a variety of hiking routes to its natural monuments. For instance, you can find moderate trails like the 'Sărita Pintii Viewpoint – Rooster’s Ridge loop from Pasul Gutâi' or the 'Igniș Peak – Igniș Peak loop from Salvamont'. While many trails in Munții Gutâi involve moderate to difficult terrain, there are easier options suitable for families. For example, the Easy hikes in Munții Gutâi guide lists routes like the 'Breb Orthodox Church – View of the Countryside loop from Breb' which are generally shorter and less strenuous, allowing families to enjoy the natural beauty without extreme difficulty.
The Munții Gutâi region is primarily composed of andesite and volcanic agglomerations, which are remnants of ancient volcanic activity. This geological makeup is responsible for the dramatic and rugged beauty of the landscape, including unique formations like the andesite cliffs of Cheile Tătarului Gorge and the iconic Rooster’s Ridge, which is a remnant of a volcanic crater that erupted millions of years ago.
The best time to visit Munții Gutâi for hiking and exploring its natural monuments is generally during the warmer months, from late spring to early autumn (May to October). During this period, the weather is more stable, trails are clear of snow, and the rich biodiversity, including unique flora, is vibrant. Winter offers opportunities for raw powder skiing and snowshoeing, particularly around Igniș Peak, but amenities are limited.
