The single track is a good change in the Crown Domain Het Loo which has a wide range of well-maintained paths. It is a playful and winding route with nice differences in height. In the summer, the sand here is loose, which makes the descent a lot more challenging. In the autumn and winter it is wet and you can come across some slippery tree roots here and there, which also makes it fun. If you come from the south, you will get a few tough climbs along the way where you can really test your condition. Please note that this part of the Crown Domain is closed every year from mid-September until Christmas because of the hunt of our royal family.

That was unexpected for me. A highly recommended route for anyone who likes to be out in the forest. It is very beginner-friendly and offers a lot of flow. Even without a lot of elevation gain, you can have a lot of fun in the curves. Great! 👍 Please pay attention to the direction of the route! Found on https://mtbharderwijkermelo.nl/

Ermelo is renowned for its natural mountain biking (MTB) routes rather than traditional, purpose-built bike parks. You'll find extensive networks of natural trails winding through forests, heathlands, and sand drifts, offering varied terrain and engaging experiences for different skill levels. The focus is on immersive rides through the Veluwe's beautiful landscapes.
Some highly regarded routes include the Haspelberg Singletrack Trail (Veluwe), which is great for both mountain and gravel bikes. Another popular choice is the MTB Route Harderwijk – Veluwe, known for its well-maintained official route. For a more challenging ride, consider the Margaretha Boslaan Singletrack with its short, steep climbs and descents.
The main MTB Route Ermelo is approximately 24.2 kilometers long and is generally rated as 'blue' (intermediate difficulty). This makes it suitable for both beginners and more experienced riders looking for a fast training round. It involves around 202 meters of climbing and features challenging turns (kombochten) and natural obstacles through singletracks.
Yes, the Ermelo route can be easily linked with the 21-kilometer route in Harderwijk, creating a longer combined route of about 45 kilometers. There's also a 2.1 km 'Trek Trail' (red route) at the Bouw- en Infrapark that can be combined with the main route on weekdays, offering a technically attractive short loop with jumps and berms.
The routes pass through picturesque areas such as the Strokelbos and parts of the Ermelose Heide, where you can see ancient burial mounds and one of Gelderland's largest sheepfolds. The diverse landscape includes forests, heathlands, and sand drifts. The Singletrack Kroondomein offers a winding and hilly ride through the Royal Domain, known for its beautiful paths.
The MTB Route Ermelo can be started from several locations, including Transferium Harderwijk, Bungalowpark de Haeghehorst, and Camping Het Vossenhol. For the MTB Route Harderwijk – Veluwe, you can find parking at Hotel Van der Valk or at Watertorenweg in Harderwijk.
The routes are generally enjoyable year-round, but spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful scenery with changing foliage or blooming heathlands. Be aware that parts of the Kroondomein, such as the Singletrack Kroondomein, are closed from mid-September until Christmas due to hunting season.
While the main MTB routes are intermediate, the region's focus on natural trails means there are often less technical paths suitable for families. The general cycling network in Ermelo has seen improvements, with many paths being renovated and widened to enhance safety and comfort for all cyclists. Look for routes categorized as 'family_friendly' in the highlights.
Beyond mountain biking, Ermelo offers a variety of outdoor activities. You can explore numerous cycling routes for touring bicycles, such as those found in Cycling around Ermelo, or try gravel biking with routes like those in Gravel biking around Ermelo. There are also many running trails, including those listed in Running Trails around Ermelo.
The Singletrack Kroondomein is often considered a hidden gem, appearing suddenly in the middle of the Royal Domain. It offers a wonderful change of scenery with winding and hilly sections that are fun and playful, though not overly technical. Another interesting spot is the Legal trail through the heath, which is part of the official MTB route and offers a unique ride over a hardpack sandy path through the heathland.
Yes, Transferium Harderwijk, one of the starting points for the MTB Route Ermelo, offers facilities to clean bikes after a muddy ride, which is a convenient service for cyclists.
Boswachterij Speulderbos is another significant area for biking in Ermelo, featuring well-maintained trails suitable for all levels. It's famous for its 'dancing trees,' whose crooked trunks create a unique and atmospheric setting. You can enjoy varied paths through forest and heath, with some surprising single-trail sections.
Currently, there is a petition underway to establish a permanent pump track in Ermelo. This indicates a community desire for more dedicated, purpose-built cycling facilities, though the primary attractions for cyclists remain the extensive natural mountain bike routes.
