The terrain is nice, but the signage isn't great... we start a circuit (no. 5) and very quickly there are no more signs... Circuit no. 7 seems well signposted

Excellent circuit in the Florimond woods for those looking for a few speed sensations. To prolong the experience, the slag heaps 230 and 94 are not far away!

Pyramidal circuit Follow the black arrows n°7, some of them are missing (the GPS tracks help to make the complete tour). There are also a few climbs/descents that are a little technical but short to avoid for real beginners but it's easy to do all the same. Some area a little muddy during rainy periods. I tried to get as close as possible to the original circuit or the arrows by doing the circuit several times & comparing the GPS tracks recorded and adding the missing paths on OpenStreeMap (sometimes the path of the map & the arrows differ a little, e.g. from the 1st entrance to the forest, the arrows pass a little lower than the path on the map, so I made a little mix between the 2, which adds a little climb ;) )

The Drocourt slag heap is like a bike park (without the cable cars ;o). Ideal for improving technique or letting off steam for two hours

for heavy hitters who are not afraid of emptiness in places and a good sense of balance and a bike in good condition, especially the brakes so as not to pick up too much speed because there are many gullies, in places do a survey before making a decent if you do not want to fall into a ravine at the end of the decent and even at a place in a deep canyon, for safety do not do it alone in the event of a serious fall it is an isolated place very little frequented.

The Sallaumines area offers a unique blend of post-industrial landscapes and natural features. You'll find extensive VTT routes that leverage former mining slag heaps, known as "terrils," and surrounding wooded areas. These terrils provide significant elevation changes, offering ascents, descents, and technical passages, often with singletracks through forested sections. The terrain can be rolling with technical sections, providing a dynamic riding experience.
Yes, experienced riders will find challenging options. For instance, the Terril de Drocourt is described as being like a bike park, ideal for improving technique, with sections that require a good sense of balance and well-maintained brakes due to gullies and steep descents. The Singletrack on Terril de Grenay also offers an excellent technical single track.
The Cabiddu Park MTB Base is a great starting point for several mountain bike routes and provides useful facilities. Here, you'll find a washing station and an inflator available for cyclists.
Many trails offer impressive views, particularly from the top of the terrils. From the Singletrack on Terril de Grenay, you can enjoy magnificent views of the mining basin and the twin slag heaps of Loos-en-Gohelle. The Spoil heaps 74 and 74a also provide a breathtaking view once you reach the summit after a good climb.
While many routes involve technical sections, the broader network around Sallaumines includes greenways (voies vertes) and sections of larger véloroutes like the EuroVelo 5. These paths offer more relaxed cycling experiences, often connecting different towns and natural areas, which can be suitable for families or beginners. Organized VTT events also frequently offer diverse routes for different skill levels, including shorter, less technical options.
The region's trails are generally accessible for much of the year. However, for the most comfortable experience, spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and often drier conditions. During organized VTT events, which are common, routes are well-curated and supported, making them enjoyable regardless of the exact season.
The Sallaumines area is rich in industrial heritage. The cycling routes often incorporate former mining territories, particularly the terrils, which are man-made hills from mining waste. These sites offer a unique historical context, allowing you to explore landscapes transformed by industry into green spaces. You'll be cycling through areas that tell the story of the region's mining past.
Visitors particularly enjoy the unique combination of industrial heritage and natural landscapes. The challenge of climbing the terrils and the rewarding views from the top are frequently praised. The variety of trails, from technical singletracks to pumptracks like the Bois de Florimond Pumptrack, also contributes to a diverse and engaging riding experience.
