This section of trail is a bit too steep for climbing but looks like it would be great as a technical singletrack downhill. Climbing it was a bike push most of the way but I think it is all rideable as a downhill.

This is a short little loop but it's really fast and fun. It is narrow and there are several other short trails that pass through the area. It's great for a hike, but even more fun on a mountain bike.

This trail is very good but has some very tricky sections. If you go west they are almost impossible to go up and if you go east they are very difficult to go down. If you are a crack of the descents it can be super fun. It was a little more than I could do.

This trail is not that easy on a gravel bike. There are some sections that are quite technical but not too steep. I think on a mountain bike it would be easier, but there may still be sections that need to be walked. The trail starts out as a dirt road and turns into a very narrow dirt track singletrack. Probably best left for hikers.

Very fun trails and practically cycleable in its entirety. A good option to get off the Coll Sabastida, Collet de Pixanúvies and Pruit

Santa Pau, located within the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, offers an extensive network of mountain biking and cycling routes rather than traditional bike parks with lift systems. You'll find diverse experiences, from easy, family-friendly rides to challenging trails for experienced cyclists, all winding through unique volcanic landscapes, ancient forests, and charming medieval villages.
Yes, the region features challenging trails for skilled riders. For instance, La Rebolled Singletrack is suitable for technical singletrack downhill riding, though it can be steep for climbing. Another option is Crest Line Singletrack, which offers very tricky sections with difficult descents and ascents, providing a fun challenge.
Intermediate riders can enjoy trails like Bonavista Singletrack, which is a short, fast, and fun loop with narrow paths and several connecting trails. Another great choice is Fun singletracks near Coll Sabastida and Pruit, which are practically entirely cyclable and offer a good option for descents.
While the guide focuses on bike parks, the broader Garrotxa region offers easy, family-friendly routes. For example, the "R2 – La Fageda" route is an easy 15 km ride through the Fageda d'en Jordà forest and volcanic landscapes, often connecting to Olot via the Carrilet greenway. These routes are suitable for various skill levels, including beginners and families.
Cycling in the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone allows you to explore over 40 volcanic cones and 20 lava flows, including notable volcanoes like Santa Margarida and Croscat. You can also cycle through lush forests, such as the unique Fageda d'en Jordà beech forest, which grows on an ancient lava flow. Many routes also feature scenic viewpoints.
Absolutely. Many cycling routes either pass through or start from Santa Pau, a remarkably preserved medieval town with a 13th-century castle and a Gothic square. More challenging routes, like the "Santa Pau Medieval Village – Pont Vell of Besalú loop," connect Santa Pau with other iconic medieval towns like Besalú, known for its Romanesque bridge, allowing you to immerse yourself in the region's rich heritage.
The Garrotxa region is beautiful year-round, but autumn is particularly recommended for cycling through the Fageda d'en Jordà when the leaves change color, offering a serene and magical experience. Generally, spring and autumn provide pleasant temperatures for cycling, avoiding the heat of summer and potential colder, wetter conditions in winter.
The Fageda d'en Jordà is a unique beech forest located on a relatively flat ancient lava flow from the Croscat volcano. Cycling routes like "R2 – La Fageda" take you directly through this serene forest. The area is also known for its "tossols" (petrified lava protrusions) up to 20 meters high, adding to the distinctiveness of the terrain. You can learn more about this unique forest on Wikipedia.
The cycling routes around Santa Pau feature mixed terrain, including singletrack, gravel roads, and paved sections. While some trails are suitable for mountain bikes, others, like Costa Rasa Singletrack, can be quite technical even for gravel bikes, with sections that might require walking. Expect a variety of surfaces as you explore volcanoes, lava flows, and forests.
Beyond cycling, the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park offers a wealth of outdoor activities. You can find numerous hiking trails, including routes to the Santa Margarida and Croscat volcanoes. There are also dedicated running trails and road cycling routes that explore the wider region.
The Garrotxa region, including Santa Pau, is bike-friendly. You'll find options for renting various types of bikes (touring, mountain, electric, gravel). While specific bike-friendly cafes aren't listed in the guide, the charming medieval villages like Santa Pau itself offer local establishments where cyclists can refuel and find accommodation.
Visitors appreciate the unique combination of volcanic landscapes, ancient forests, and medieval architecture. The diverse trails cater to various skill levels, from technical downhills to fast, fun loops. The opportunity to cycle through a landscape shaped by ancient volcanic activity, offering breathtaking views and a deep connection with nature, is a major draw.
