April 5, 2026, Picnic Area by the Anapo River

We really enjoyed this walk in a pretty flowery setting in April. Numerous passages in front of tombs in the necropolis, with a wider view of the necropolis at point 9. Note: 1) The detour around the Galleria bisanti tunnel between points 1 and 3 is chaotic. 2) At the end of the circuit between points 10 and 11, crossing the river with your feet in the water is not guaranteed depending on the season. We did it in early April and had water up to our thighs. Locate the ford at the beginning of the circuit towards point 1 or 2 to check the water level and decide whether or not to continue your circuit.

The "Ear of Dionysus," which, according to legend, Caravaggio named it. It is said that the tyrant Dionysus I of Syracuse secretly eavesdropped on the conversations of his prisoners through this cave, and since it is shaped like a donkey's ear, Caravaggio probably found the name extremely fitting.

Artificial grotto with excellent acoustics. Excavations on the plateau above uncovered the remains of a temple dedicated to Artemis. The sound was presumably used for religious ceremonies.

Freshwater spring right by the sea. Papyrus grows in the middle. It's a lovely place to stroll.

A simple geological effect or a beautiful legend of the nymph Aretusa, who was on the run and turned into water to escape underground and reappear here right by the sea. Source also with papyrus plants, which are not normally native to this area. If you don't believe in the legend yet...
