Climbing the Simancon from the west side was easy and quite fun. Same goes for the Reloj. Luckily we had a very clear day and could see all the way upto Mulhacen in the Sierra Nevada and parts of Africa. However, descending from the Simancon was not easy at all. It was difficult to find a specific route and one has to be very careful.

Puerto de las Presillas is a very popular trail in the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park in Andalusia. This route offers stunning views of the Sierra del Endrinal and allows you to observe unique geological formations, such as sharp ridges and hollows, created by the dissolution of limestone rock.

What a great view - 360°! The path here is steep but well maintained! Unfortunately, you can only get to the summit with a (free) permit (approx. 20 people/day) - register in advance! - . From the north, El Torreon is a steep wall, from the southwest: a real mountain path! It's worth it!

An interesting ascent/descent to the summit, pathless with beautiful friction plates (if you can find them: occasionally small yellow arrows on the rock), but hands are not needed, if the visibility is good: fantastic!

The cave was created out of necessity. The Sierra del Algarrobo blocks the Gaduares river, forcing the river to erode the rocks to find a way out. The resulting cave complex is nothing short of spectacular. The Cueva del Gato, 17 meters wide and 25 meters high, offers a hollowed-out natural space, where the Gaduares river re-emerges and joins the Guadiaro river. The main passage is over 4 km long. During the drier seasons, 25 individual lakes appear in the cave complex. The longest of these is the so-called Storm Cape and is 114 meters long. The lakes can only be crossed by swimming. The cave has a length of just over 8 km, but you are not allowed to enter it.

Using the power of moving water to drive a mill wheel is an ancient invention that dates back to pre-Christian times. Thanks to such a construction, human or animal muscle power could be easily replaced by a watercourse - natural or artificially created - in order to grind grain into corn, for example. There are essentially two different ways of driving watermills: Either the water simply hits the blades of the water wheel from below to set it in motion; or the water is guided above the wheel and falls onto the blades; this type of construction is more efficient due to natural gravity.

The Sierra de Grazalema is renowned for its diverse natural features. You can explore the dramatic limestone landscapes and deep gorges of areas like Garganta Verde, or witness the ancient Spanish fir forest of El Pinsapar, a unique ecosystem dating back to the Ice Age. The region also features extensive cave systems, such as the Cat Cave, known for its impressive waterfall and underground galleries.
Yes, the region offers a glimpse into prehistory. The Cueva de la Pileta, near Ronda, is famous for its Paleolithic and Neolithic wall paintings, some over 30,000 years old, depicting animals. It was declared a national monument in 1924. Additionally, you can find historical sites like the Ruins of the Majaceite River Water Mill, which showcases ancient engineering using water power.
For families, the Enchanted Forest (Llanos de Rabel Forest) is a great option. It's considered family-friendly and offers a picturesque, wooded route with plenty of shade, ideal for exploring the unique Spanish fir trees. The Cat Cave area also has a picnic spot, making it suitable for a family break, though entry into the cave itself is forbidden.

The best time to visit often depends on the specific monument and your activity. For places like Garganta Verde, April and May are ideal when wildflowers are in bloom and the weather is pleasant. For geological sites like Presillas Pass, visiting in winter or spring is recommended to appreciate the contrast of the rocks with the grass. Note that the Enchanted Forest is not accessible from June 1st to October 15th due to fire risk.
