Nice little hike along the river and the palm trees, be careful when hiking as the palm trees have very sharp thorns. On some days it can be crowded as it is very popular for swimming and hiking.

February 3, 2026, Folded Rock Formations of Agios Pavlos

The Apoplystra folds are located near Agios Pavlos in the Rethymno region and are a series of impressive rock formations distinguished by their vibrant colors and intricate patterns. These folds are the result of intense geological forces that, over millions of years, have compressed and twisted layers of sedimentary rock, creating a visually captivating landscape.

Around 50 million years ago, the region was subjected to intense pressure from tectonic movements, causing the sedimentary rock layers to fold and deform. This process led to the unique, angular formations that can be seen today and are to be designated as natural monuments of Greece due to their geological significance.

A highly recommended hike. There's plenty of parking (extra touristy 🫣😅). Restrooms are also available, and they were quite clean. The signage is a bit outdated, but if you have a cell phone or something else with you, you'll find your way easily. The route is quite challenging; the first 1.5km involve a good 200 meters of elevation gain. The view, however, is simply stunning. Anyone who wants to see wildlife will definitely get their money's worth here. We saw several mountain goats, vultures including their nests, and various other small animals. The highlight is the chapel, which unfortunately was somewhat damaged when we visited. We definitely recommend this route and consider it a must-do for anyone in the area or on Crete.

The fountain itself is very beautiful and offers the best spring water, which you can even fill directly into bottles. Legend has it that if you drink water from all the snapdragons in one day, you'll live to be over 100 years old. 😉😎 There are also many taverns and souvenir shops near the fountain, and accordingly, many tourists. So it's always very busy. If you want to enjoy it in peace, you should go there early in the morning or in the evening. 😉

First, a wide farm track leads into the gorge. At a fork, a staircase leads down to the gorge. After this staircase, there is some climbing over rocks and you reach a point where you can only continue by swimming. If you take the staircase up and do not go up to the road, then further down, you pass the chapel and the bridge, and can walk a little further to the waterfall. Canyoning is also offered here.

The start at the water turbine is particularly recommended. Take swimming shoes with you so you can walk through the river. The many small pools invite you to swim. The area is beautiful and you hardly meet anyone on this path. Once you get to the waterfall, it is of course worth swimming through the rather cold water to the waterfall, despite the crowds there. It is a very impressive experience. By the way, very few people swim to the water. Of course, you should be a confident swimmer here. At the very end, however, there is a rope that you can hold on to in order to experience the magnificent impression of the turquoise blue water below you and the roaring water.
