The Pedestrian Bridge Over US 74 – Bechtler Mint Historical Site loop offers a unique road cycling experience, primarily utilizing the paved Thermal Belt Rail Trail. You'll pedal through a diverse tapestry of rural landscapes, shaded wooded sections, and the quaint charm of small towns like Rutherfordton and Forest City. The smooth asphalt surface and gentle elevation changes make for a comfortable ride, even as you cover significant ground.

This is a substantial outing, covering 63.8 miles (102.6 km) with 3483 feet (1061 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 5 hours and 16 minutes. While the trail itself is mostly flat, the sheer distance and rolling terrain contribute to its difficult rating, making it a rewarding challenge for experienced cyclists. Start from Pine Street Parking for easy access to the rail trail and its key features.

Beyond the ride, the loop provides a fascinating glimpse into history at the Bechtler Mint Historical Site, where America's first $1 gold coin was minted. The Thermal Belt Rail Trail, a successful rails-to-trails conversion, is well-marked and offers amenities like bike repair stations, ensuring a convenient and enjoyable journey through Rutherford County.
