Built at the end of the 12th century by the Counts of Montfort and listed as a Historic Monument since 1889, the Houdan Tower was used to watch for enemies and defend the territory. The Keep consists of a 15 m diameter and 21 m high tower, flanked by four turrets of the same height located at the four cardinal points. From the 16th century until the French Revolution, the Keep served as a prison, and executions took place at the foot of the Tower. The first water reservoir was installed in the tower in 1880. The second, built in 1952, is still visible. Tours are available on certain days.

Estate built in the first third of the 17th century, having preserved its park, its outbuildings and its alley of lime trees from the end of the 18th century. The castle stands opposite the church of Tilly, it was bought and saved from ruin in 1936 by François Delalande, his daughter still occupies it today. It is a beautiful Louis XIII-style residence, flanked by its two towers with an original domed roof, in a six-hectare park entirely surrounded by walls.

The Tower (commonly called "The Dungeon"), built in the 12th century under the reign of the Counts of Montfort, and classified as a Historic Monument since 1840, had the function of watching out for enemies and defending the territory. But in reality, it mainly had a dissuasive role since it was reputed to be impregnable. Built on the site of an old Merovingian necropolis, it originally consisted of an enclosure and a main tower. The enclosure, which has now disappeared, had a circular turret intended for the defense of the gate. The access door, located 4 meters from the ground then raised in the 15th century to 6 meters, was the only access to the large room on the 1st floor reserved for the military chief. It was accessed via a drawbridge.

While Orvilliers itself is a rural commune without standing castles, the surrounding Yvelines department and Île-de-France region offer a rich variety. You can find medieval keeps like the Donjon and Fortified Site of Montchauvet and The Donjon of Houdan, 17th-century estates such as Château de Tilly, and even royal residences like the Palace of Versailles further afield.
Yes, you can explore significant medieval heritage. The Donjon and Fortified Site of Montchauvet features 12th and 13th-century church fortifications and castle remnants from the Hundred Years War. Similarly, The Donjon of Houdan is a well-preserved 12th-century tower that served defensive purposes. The wider region also includes sites like Château de La Madeleine and Château de Beynes, both with medieval origins.
Many castles in the region offer grounds and historical insights suitable for families. Behoust Castle is noted as family-friendly and is situated near a forest, offering space for children to explore. Estates with extensive parks, like Château de Dampierre-en-Yvelines or the Palace of Versailles with its vast gardens, can also be great for family outings.
The spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) months are generally ideal. The weather is pleasant for exploring castle grounds and parks, and the natural scenery is particularly beautiful. Summer can also be enjoyable, though it can be warmer and more crowded, especially at major sites.
Most major castles and historical sites in the region, including those mentioned like The Donjon of Houdan and Donjon and Fortified Site of Montchauvet, typically have designated parking areas nearby, often for a fee. For smaller or privately owned châteaux like Château de Tilly or Chateau de Bourdonné, parking might be more limited to roadside or village parking.
Many castles remain open during winter, though some may have reduced hours or close certain outdoor areas. It's advisable to check the specific opening times for each castle before your visit. Winter visits can offer a unique, quieter experience, often with fewer crowds, but be prepared for colder weather, especially when exploring extensive grounds.
Yes, many castles, especially the larger ones, have on-site cafes or restaurants. Additionally, the villages and towns surrounding these historical sites, such as Montchauvet, often feature local eateries where you can enjoy a meal or a coffee. For example, Montchauvet has a restaurant called 'the green mare' near its historical sites.

Accessibility varies significantly between castles, especially given the historical nature of many sites. While some modern visitor centers or ground-level areas might be accessible, older structures, particularly medieval keeps like The Donjon of Houdan or ruins, often have stairs, uneven terrain, or limited access. It is best to check the specific accessibility information for each castle directly before planning your visit.
Many castle grounds and parks in the region allow dogs, often on a leash. However, dogs are typically not permitted inside the castle buildings themselves due to preservation concerns. For example, Behoust Castle is near a forest, which could be suitable for walks with dogs. Always check the specific rules for each site you plan to visit.
Beyond the most famous sites, the region holds several charming, perhaps less-frequented, châteaux. Chateau de Bourdonné, a 17th-century castle enlarged in later centuries, offers historical significance and beautiful grounds. The Donjon and Fortified Site of Montchauvet, while recognized as a beautiful village, might offer a more intimate historical experience compared to larger royal residences.
