Royal Castle in Chęciny

Highlight • Castle

The first documentary mention of Chęcinys comes from 1275 in a document by Bolesław Wstydliwys. It is not known exactly when the place received city rights. Most likely, King Władysław I granted Ellenlang the right in the first half of the 14th century. In 1306 a castle was built on a hill.

During the suppression of the uprisings under Mikołaj Zebrzydowski in 1607, the town and the castle were destroyed. The place was further destroyed during the Northern Wars against Sweden. During the third partition of Poland, Chęciny came to Austria and became a district town. With the formation of the Duchy of Warsaw, Chęciny became part of the same and in 1815 part of Congress Poland.

After the First World War, the city again became part of the restored independent state of Poland. In September 1939 the Wehrmacht invaded Chęciny. A ghetto was established during the occupation. In July 1941, the chairman of the Judenrat asked the district chief of Kielce, Karl Hans Drechsel, for support against two “rebels”. [1] In 1945 the Red Army marched into the city, which subsequently became part of Poland again. In 1975 an administrative reform was carried out and Chęciny became part of the newly formed Kielce Voivodeship. After its dissolution, the city became part of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship.

Piekoszów can be an interesting stop on a bicycle route around Kielce. There are ruins of Jan Aleksander Tarło's palace, which was almost a copy of the Kielce bishops' palace. Although only a ruin without a roof remains of the former residence, you can still see the layout of the rooms. The history of the palace's construction is connected with an anecdote about Tarło's rivalry with the bishop of Kraków. The building is publicly accessible, but unfortunately neglected, but it can still be an interesting point on the map for history lovers.

Royal Castle in Chęciny

Highlight • Castle

The Royal Castle in Chęciny was erected on the ridge of a rocky hill (367 meters above sea level), probably at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, on the initiative of Wenceslaus II, the king of Czech and Poland. The first references to the castle date back to 1306, when in a document issued by Władysław Łokietek, the castle (Latin: castrum nostrum ducale) together with 11 villages was to be handed over to the bishop of Krakow, Jan Muskata. The clergyman was a political opponent of Łokietek, whom Piast wanted to win over to his side, but the planned diplomatic operation backfired, so already in 1307 the stronghold re-entered the royal domain. From this period there is also a mention of the first castle official in charge of the Chęciny stronghold, named Wrocław [Latin: Wroclaw].

A very beautiful place where you can marvel at the different epochs, starting with the medieval knight's castle in the western part, the ruins of a Renaissance castle in the middle of the property and the fortified farm buildings. The farm buildings house a restaurant, a hotel and a garage for old carriages and sleighs.
The offer is very large, e.g. horse riding, carriage rides, kayaking on the directly adjacent river. Details can be found here: zameksobkow.eu/en/attractions
The restaurant and the rooms of the hotel follow the theme "Middle Ages and Knight's Castle". In the restaurant you eat in the knight's hall with many interesting exhibits from the old days. The hotel's rooms are in the same style, but with modern bathrooms.

It was built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, founded by Wenceslaus II, rebuilt by the last two Piasts. It had defensive and residential functions, it was a state prison, a place where the crown treasury was stored. On May 26, 1331, a congress of knights from all Polish lands took place at the foot of the hill. Destroyed during the Swedish wars. Restored and made available again in 2015.

The palace was built in the years 1645–1650 by Jan Aleksander Tarło. It was very similar to the Kielce residence of the Kraków bishops. It remained in the Tarło family until 1842. It burned down in the mid-19th century. Since then, despite numerous attempts, its glory has not been restored. It is sad to look at 😟
