Complete with a privy! And it’s a 10/10 privy here, friends. Fully stocked with toilet paper and hand sanitizer. There was no complimentary newspaper, but there WAS a Leave No Trace poster on the wall inside, so that counts for something I guess. Note that if you’re planning on making a 2am dash from your tent to this gem of a privy here, this campsite is for tents only, and if you want to spend the night here (as well as anywhere else in Inyo National Forest) you must obtain a permit via Rec.Gov. Search for Inyo National Forest permits, then select your entry/exit location as β€œPiute Pass”. Easy peasy, lemon cheesy.

Breathtaking view and feelings of happiness guaranteed after the ascent! There are several metal signs on the summit that can be used for a photo. The shelter was full of snow when we were up and I didn't look further. And yes, there is a cell phone network and almost all thru hikers use this to get in touch with loved ones. ;)

With an elevation of 4,421 meters, Mount Whitney is the highest point in the United States. The summit is the southern end of the famous John Muir Trail. At the summit is the Mount Whitney Summit Shelter, a granite shelter built in 1909. It has three rooms and was built as a refuge for hikers from storms, but also to house scientists studying altitude. It is the site of Charles Greeley Abbot's spectroscopic observations of Mars to test whether or not the planet had water.

You'll need to leave Whitney Summit by noon to have a reasonable chance of getting to Whitney Portal before sunset.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some popular huts and shelters in Inyo County?

Inyo County offers a range of unique shelters. The Smithsonian Institution Shelter on Mount Whitney is a historic granite structure providing refuge at the highest point in the contiguous U.S. Another popular spot is Mengel Cabin, a remote, weatherproof hut known for its self-sustaining provisions. Anvil Camp also offers great campsites and views.

What is the historical significance of the Smithsonian Institution Shelter?

The Smithsonian Institution Shelter, also known as the Mount Whitney Summit Shelter, was built in 1909. Its construction was inspired by a lightning strike that killed a hiker in 1904. This three-room granite shelter served not only to protect hikers from harsh weather but also housed scientists, including Charles Greeley Abbot, who conducted spectroscopic observations of Mars to investigate the presence of water.

What should I know before visiting Mengel Cabin?

Mengel Cabin is a remote, weatherproof hut often stocked with food and water by previous visitors, and it includes an outhouse. It's an excellent base for exploring nearby canyons. However, it is not rodent-proof, so caution regarding hantavirus is advised. A 4x4 high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended for access due to the rugged terrain.

Are there any other historic cabins or sites in Inyo County that offer a glimpse into the past?

Beyond the well-known huts, Inyo County is rich in history. Frenchy's Cabin in the Inyo Mountains is a less-traveled two-room stone structure that likely served as a store and now houses artifacts and a logbook, offering a personal connection to the area's past. Additionally, Putnam's Cabin in Independence marks the site of the first permanent habitation in what is now Inyo County, built in 1861, serving as a home, trading post, hospital, and 'fort' for early settlers.

Do I need a permit to visit or stay overnight near huts in Inyo County?

Yes, permits are often required, especially for popular areas. For instance, to camp at locations like Lone Pine Lake, Outpost Camp, Consultation Lake, or Trail Camp near Mount Whitney, you need a valid permit from the forest service, often obtained through a lottery system. Similarly, for camping at North Lake Campground or anywhere else in Inyo National Forest, you must obtain a permit via Rec.Gov.

What outdoor activities can I do near the huts in Inyo County?

The diverse landscape around Inyo County's huts offers numerous outdoor activities. You can find challenging road cycling routes like Onion Valley Road and Whitney Portal, or explore easier options. Hiking is also very popular, with trails ranging from easy loops like Badlands Loop to more strenuous ascents. For more details on routes, you can check out the Road Cycling Routes in Inyo County, Easy Hikes in Inyo County, and Cycling in Inyo County guides.

Are there family-friendly options for camping or staying near huts?

While many huts are remote and challenging to access, there are family-friendly camping options nearby. North Lake Campground in Inyo National Forest is a tent-only campsite with amenities like a privy, making it suitable for families. Remember to obtain a permit in advance for any overnight stays in the National Forest.

What kind of natural features can I expect to see around these huts?

Inyo County's huts are situated amidst breathtaking natural beauty. You'll encounter the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains, including the towering Mount Whitney, and the vast, stark landscapes of Death Valley. The Owens Valley provides a contrast with its unique geological formations and high-desert flora. Expect dramatic elevation changes, rugged canyons, and expansive viewpoints offering stunning vistas.

What is the best time to visit huts in Inyo County?

The best time to visit largely depends on the specific hut and your planned activities. High-altitude huts like the Smithsonian Institution Shelter are typically accessible during the warmer months (late spring to early fall) when snow has melted. Lower-elevation and more remote cabins like Mengel Cabin might be visited year-round, though extreme summer heat in Death Valley areas and winter conditions in the mountains require careful planning and preparation.

What do visitors enjoy most about the huts in Inyo County?

Visitors frequently highlight the sense of accomplishment and the breathtaking views, especially after challenging ascents to places like Mount Whitney. The historical significance of structures like the Smithsonian Institution Shelter and the unique, remote experience of cabins like Mengel Cabin are also highly valued. The solitude, connection to nature, and the rich history of the region are consistently praised.

What are the accessibility considerations for reaching these huts?

Access to huts in Inyo County varies significantly. Reaching the Smithsonian Institution Shelter on Mount Whitney involves a challenging, high-altitude hike requiring permits. For Mengel Cabin, a 4x4 high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended due to the rugged terrain. Always research current conditions and road accessibility before planning your trip.
