Alpine Lake in Chaffee County is a scenic lake set in a majestic valley bounded on both sides by a collection of 14,000-foot mountain peaks and scenic woodland. You will find this 29-acre lake along Chalk Creek Drive on the eastern side of St. Elmo Ghost Town. It is a veritable scenic feast for the eyes, so the effort to get here is worth it. It is simply a wonderful place to take a break. It is on a dirt road, so the trail to it is best suited for stout touring bikes with decent tires, such as a hardtail or a gravel bike.

At 11,523 feet, Hartenstein Lake is tucked away at the edge of treeline in a basin between Turner Peak (13,233 feet) and Mount Yale (14,196 feet). It stays snowy up here late into spring some seasons, and you can always plan for water crossings and muddy bits of trail. The lake is much less visited than the peaks in the area and offers a real wilderness feel. The trail approaching the lake is mostly runnable grades. The runnability of the trail really depends on how wet everything is.
