At the edge of this road a pond which forms with the forest which surrounds it a protected natural area. Each year, during the thaw (roughly from February to April), a "toadstool" is installed on the road that runs along the pond. But what is a toaddrome exactly? So, it is not a place where one could indulge in clandestine bets on toad races, but a device intended to prevent these poor beasts from being crushed by cars in crossing the road to breed and lay their eggs in the pond on the other side of the road. Indeed, thousands of common toads, but also frogs and newts, begin their long prenuptial migrations around March each year. They go to the nearest pond or pond to breed. Once their duty is done, they leave the aquatic environment to return to their summering areas where they will spend most of their time feeding. In order to avoid a carnage of amphibians on the road, a tarpaulin is planted 600m on each side of the road to block their passage. In various places a hole has been made in which a bucket is buried. By looking for a passage all along the tarpaulin, the toad will inevitably end up at the bottom of a bucket. Every morning, volunteers come to collect toads and other frogs and drop them off on the other side of the road.

Located at an altitude of 154 meters1, the pond covers an area of 0.8 hectares. The “Ponts-Quentin stream” flows into the Rompu pond — coming from the Holland ponds located about 1 km upstream to the east — and comes out to flow, about ten kilometers further to the west, in the Vesgre, having previously changed its name twice: first under the name of “Etang-Neuf stream” then under that of “Grapelin”. The Ponts-Quentin stream passes under departmental road 138 before flowing into the pond, which justifies the undulation of the road and its bend. The pond is part of the Rambouillet national forest, a private state domain. As such, its management is ensured by the National Forestry Office (ONF). Wikipedia

Developed during the reign of Louis XIV, this set of ponds and hydraulic structures was set up under the supervision of the “engineer, architect and hydraulics engineer”: Vauban himself. The 6 ponds, perched at an altitude of 174 meters, had the primary purpose of draining water in order to supply water to the basins of the Domaine de Versailles.

Among the most appreciated lakes are Rompu Pond, known for its charming reflections within the Rambouillet forest, and Étang de Hollande, a historical site that once supplied water to the Versailles fountains. Visitors also enjoy the preserved Vilpert Ponds, ideal for a break or picnic.
Yes, the Base de Loisirs des Étangs de Hollande, located in Saint Léger en Yvelines, is approximately 11.0 km from Adainville and offers excellent water quality for swimming. It's a dedicated area for public recreation.
The lakes offer various activities. You can enjoy walking and cycling trails around Étang de Saint-Hubert, which is also popular for fishing. The Base de Loisirs des Étangs de Hollande is great for swimming. For a wider range of water sports like sailing, pedal boating, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding, consider the Plan d'Eau de la Ferté-Macé, though it is further afield.
Many of the lakes and surrounding areas are family-friendly. Rompu Pond and Étang de Hollande are both listed as family-friendly highlights. The Base de Loisirs des Étangs de Hollande is particularly suitable for families due to its swimming facilities and recreational options.
Several lakes in the region have historical ties to the Palace of Versailles. Both the Étang de Saint-Hubert and Étang de Hollande were part of the intricate hydraulic network built during the reign of Louis XIV to supply water to the famous fountains of Versailles. This historical context adds a unique dimension to their natural beauty.
Yes, the Étang de Saint-Hubert is designated as an ornithological reserve and is an excellent spot for birdwatching, attracting numerous species of migratory birds. The Lande Forêt Pond, though further away, is also known for its peaceful, natural setting and rich biodiversity, including various bird species.
Absolutely. Many lakes offer surrounding trails. For instance, you can find a pleasant trail through the forest and along the ponds. For more structured routes, explore the Running Trails around Adainville, which include routes like the Étang de Condé-Sur-Vesgre loop. There are also MTB Trails and Road Cycling Routes that pass by or near various ponds and lakes.
Beyond the water bodies themselves, you can find diverse ecosystems. The Guiperreux Toad Crossing highlights a protected natural area where amphibians migrate to a pond. The Lande Forêt Pond is particularly rich in biodiversity, with dragonflies and carnivorous plants found in its marshy areas.
Visitors appreciate the peaceful and natural settings, the historical significance of some ponds, and the opportunities for relaxation and outdoor activities. Many find the reflections in Rompu Pond to be beautiful, and the Vilpert Ponds are often cited as a great spot for a picnic or a quiet break.
While specific parking details vary by location, many natural areas and leisure bases typically offer parking. For instance, the Vilpert Ponds are noted as being set back from the main road, suggesting a more secluded spot. Always check local signage for parking regulations. For public transport, options might be limited given the rural nature of Adainville and its surrounding areas, so driving is often the most convenient way to access these lakes.
The lakes offer beauty throughout the year. Spring and autumn are ideal for walking and birdwatching, with pleasant temperatures and vibrant foliage or migratory bird activity. Summer is perfect for swimming at the Base de Loisirs des Étangs de Hollande. Even in winter, the reflections in ponds like Rompu Pond can create striking natural scenes.
