Another essential route in the Matarraña region

'El Parrizal' follows the (super clear) Matarraña river through a gorge. It is a walk of approximately 10 kilometers, depending on where you start and how far you can go. We chose the parking lot closest to the gorge and simply could not continue walking after a certain point due to the high water. There are bridges, wooden walkways and sometimes you have to cross the river balancing on small stones. We got our feet wet a few times, but that's okay when it's almost 40 degrees! If it had been allowed, I would have immediately jumped into the water for a refreshing dip, but swimming is prohibited here. Below are the photos. Already convinced how incredibly beautiful it is here?!

Visitors frequently enjoy the Portell de l'Infern, an imposing natural passage that is an emblematic site of the Tenença de Benifassà. The El Parrizal Gorge End Point is also very popular for its beautiful, easy, and well-maintained hiking trail with great viewpoints and footbridges. The Parrissal Walkways offer a unique experience with wooden walkways along the Matarranya River.
Yes, the Portell de l'Infern is suitable for families with children. Additionally, the Sénia River's Fluvial Path provides a gentle and charming walk alongside the river, featuring wooden railings, steps, and a hanging bridge, making it ideal for families. The El Parrizal Gorge End Point also offers an easy and well-maintained hiking trail.
The region is characterized by rugged landscapes, limestone formations, and diverse Mediterranean vegetation. You'll encounter dramatic gorges with vertical walls, natural passages between large rock formations, and rivers like the Matarranya and Sénia carving their way through the terrain. Features include wooden walkways, natural anchors for rappelling, and varied flora and ancient rock paintings in areas like the Parrissal.
For technical canyoning, spring is often recommended due to optimal water flow in the ravines of Els Ports Natural Park. Barranc Malany is popular in winter, spring, and autumn, but can be dangerous after heavy rains. Barranc dels Hortets is suitable throughout most of the year. For hiking and scenic walks, the dry season is best, especially for areas like the Parrizal Gorges where high water levels can make passage difficult.
Yes, for the Parrissal Walkways, a Municipal Ordinance from March 2022 regulates a public price for transit, requiring a ticket and personal insurance. It's advisable to check the Beseit City Council's website for the latest information and to purchase tickets in advance. For other technical canyoning routes, always ensure you have appropriate gear and understand local regulations.
Beyond canyoning and gorge walks, the area offers a wide range of outdoor activities. You can find numerous MTB trails, running trails, and gravel biking routes. The Els Ports Natural Park provides extensive opportunities for hiking and sports, with diverse itineraries for nature lovers.
Yes, the region offers several options for technical canyoning. Barranc Malany is an aquatic canyon with small drops and a rappel up to 5 meters. Barranc dels Hortets features two rappels, with the longest being 38 meters, using natural anchors. Pont Foradat is also a known canyoning location in the Els Ports massif. These routes require appropriate gear and experience.
The duration varies by canyon. For example, Barranc Malany typically takes about an hour to complete. Barranc dels Hortets also offers a moderate descent that takes around an hour. For hiking-focused gorge experiences like the Parrissal Walkways, the route itself is about 2.3 km, but the overall experience can take longer depending on your pace and exploration.
Swimming is generally prohibited in certain areas, such as the Matarranya River within the Parrizal Gorges, because the water is used as drinking water for Beceite. Always look for local signage and respect environmental regulations regarding water activities.
