Río Higuerón Gorge

Highlight • Gorge

Not only a nice detour, but also a possible entry (coming from the north) to the official trail to Frigiliana.

In March 2019 (like Pilgrim Peter the year before) we first tried to take the upper descent down the mountain near Porta Verde to the Rio Higueron. Since the trail was not clear, quite steep and it was quite windy, we turned around. The second entry attempt at the cistern promised to become better, although at first we did not want it to be true that the "way" should be the (aquifer) riverbed.

At the waterfall there was a rope down, but since we did not know what awaits us behind it, we are then back a bit and have about 150m before the change made around the top. This way was actually ok, but cost me (since I am not afraid of heights) great overcoming.

For us an exciting experience and the absolute highlight of our hike.

July 26, 2025, Cascada de los Árboles Petrificados

The sinter crusts of the lime-rich water make the tree trunks trapped in the waterfall appear petrified. Hence the common name "Cascada de los Arboles Petrificados" (Petrified Trees Cascade). However, these are not petrified trees, but mineral deposits in flowing water that cover both rocks and plants (sinter). Source: Wikiloc

Currently, a section of 800 meters is still heavily overgrown, with huge rosemary and sage bushes, as well as thorns. It's best to bring a stick or something similar to push them away. However, the view is unique, and the spring is a dream.

In March 2025 there was a lot of water flowing, a trip is then only possible with suitable water shoes. We did not have that and returned.

The riverbed of the Rio Higueron, which dries up in summer, is a wonderful place to walk in summer. It is shaded in long sections by huge oleander bushes, which are particularly beautiful when they are in bloom. In the Frigiliana area, there is a large difference in height of around 10 m. There is a staircase there, but it is not immediately visible, so keep your eyes open.

You'll find geological formations like the 'petrified trees' at Petrified Trees Waterfall, and opportunities for river trekking.

What is the best way to experience the Maro Waterfall?

The Maro Waterfall is uniquely accessible by sea, primarily via kayak or canoe. You can rent kayaks from Maro Beach or Burriana Beach. This allows you to paddle between cliffs and feel the spray of the 15-meter freshwater cascade as it meets the Mediterranean.

Are there any waterfalls suitable for swimming in Nerja?

Río Verde Waterfalls, Barranco de las Chortales is known as a nice shady spot for swimming, especially on hot summer days. Similarly, Las Chorreras Pool on the Río Verde is a large pool formed by a waterfall, perfect for bathing.

What is the best time of year to visit the waterfalls?

The flow of the waterfalls, especially the Maro Waterfall, can vary significantly. It is most powerful in spring after heavy rains. In late summer, the flow might reduce to a trickle or even disappear temporarily. For river-based waterfalls, spring and early summer generally offer good flow and pleasant hiking conditions.

Are there family-friendly waterfall hikes in the area?

Always check current conditions and difficulty before setting out.

What happened to El Vado de los Patos (Río Chillar Waterfall)?

While historically a significant attraction and the culmination of the popular Río Chillar hike, El Vado de los Patos is currently closed to visitors. Please check local advisories for any updates on its accessibility.

What kind of natural formations can I expect to see at the waterfalls?

What outdoor activities can I do near these waterfalls?

Beyond exploring the waterfalls, the region around Nerja offers various outdoor activities. You can find numerous running trails, gravel biking routes, and challenging MTB trails. Many of these routes offer scenic views of the natural landscapes surrounding the waterfalls.

How long do the waterfall hikes typically take?

The duration varies depending on the specific waterfall and your starting point. For instance, reaching Las Chorreras Pool on the Río Verde typically takes about two hours of walking. River hikes can be longer, often involving several kilometers of walking through the water.

Are there any viewpoints to admire the waterfalls from above?

While some waterfalls are best experienced up close or by sea, many trails and gorges offer viewpoints. For the Maro Waterfall, the best panoramic views are from the sea, where you can appreciate the imposing cliffs and the dramatic drop into the Mediterranean.

What should I wear for a waterfall hike in Nerja?

For river-based hikes, it's essential to wear appropriate footwear that can get wet and offers good grip, as you'll often be walking in the riverbed. Many visitors recommend bringing an extra pair of shoes for changing. Light, quick-drying clothing is also advisable, especially during warmer months.
