A beautiful and not demanding route, perhaps too crowded.

Another essential route in the Matarraña region

'El Parrizal' follows the (super clear) Matarraña river through a gorge. It is a walk of approximately 10 kilometers, depending on where you start and how far you can go. We chose the parking lot closest to the gorge and simply could not continue walking after a certain point due to the high water. There are bridges, wooden walkways and sometimes you have to cross the river balancing on small stones. We got our feet wet a few times, but that's okay when it's almost 40 degrees! If it had been allowed, I would have immediately jumped into the water for a refreshing dip, but swimming is prohibited here. Below are the photos. Already convinced how incredibly beautiful it is here?!

The El Parrizal Gorge End Point offers a well-maintained hiking trail with great viewpoints. The hike to the Salt de la Portellada waterfall is also easily accessible and suitable for families.

What kind of natural features can I expect to see in the canyons around Fuentespalda?

You will encounter a diverse range of natural beauty. The canyons feature dramatic eroded rock formations, deep gorges carved by rivers like the Matarraña, and lush riverside vegetation. Highlights include the impressive 20-meter high Salt de la Portellada waterfall with its turquoise natural pool, and the rugged calcareous relief of the Matarraña region bordering Els Ports Natural Park, offering dense pine and holm oak forests.

Can I go canyoning in the Fuentespalda area?

Yes, the Barranc de la Serra, located near Fuentespalda, is explicitly mentioned as a place where canyoning activities can be undertaken. This area offers descents that may involve rappels, jumps, or slides, providing a true canyoning experience within a rugged, biodiverse landscape.

What is the best time of year to visit the canyons and gorges?

The spring is an excellent time to visit, especially if you want to see the Salt de la Portellada waterfall at its most spectacular, as its flow is dependent on rainfall. For river walks like those in El Parrizal, the dry season is ideal, as some sections may require crossing the river and high water can make paths impassable. Summer offers opportunities for refreshing dips in natural pools, while autumn provides pleasant hiking conditions.

Are there any permits or fees required to access certain canyon areas?

Yes, access to the Parrissal Walkways requires a ticket. As of March 2022, the Beceite City Council approved a Municipal Ordinance regulating a public price for transit along this route. The toll is 5 euros, with a reduced price of 4 euros for participants officially registered with Estels del Sud. You can find more information and purchase tickets on the City Council's website.

What outdoor activities can I do near these canyons besides hiking?

Beyond exploring the canyons, the Fuentespalda region offers a variety of outdoor activities. You can find numerous MTB trails and road cycling routes, ranging from moderate to difficult. Popular options include the 'Lobos Salvajes' MTB route and various road cycling loops exploring nearby villages and reservoirs.

Is wild swimming allowed in the natural pools or rivers?

While the natural pool beneath the Salt de la Portellada waterfall is a popular spot for swimming, especially in summer, swimming is generally prohibited in the Matarraña River within areas like El Parrizal. This is because the water is used as drinking water for Beceite. Always check local signage for specific regulations.

What should I wear for canyoning or hiking in the Fuentespalda area?

For canyoning, appropriate gear for descents, rappels, and water activities is essential. For hiking, especially on trails like the Parrissal Walkways or Parrizal Gorges, surefootedness is important, and you should be prepared for river crossings where your feet might get wet. Wear comfortable hiking shoes, and consider bringing water shoes or sandals for river sections. Always check the weather forecast before heading out.

Are there dog-friendly hiking trails around Fuentespalda?

Many natural areas in the Matarraña region are dog-friendly, offering opportunities for hiking with your pet. However, specific regulations may apply in protected areas or on certain trails, especially those requiring permits or with delicate ecosystems. It's always best to check local guidelines for the specific trail you plan to visit to ensure it's suitable for dogs.

What do visitors enjoy most about the canyons and gorges in Fuentespalda?

Visitors frequently praise the stunning natural beauty, the unique eroded rock formations, and the refreshing experience of being immersed in nature. Are there alternatives to the Parrissal Walkways if I want to avoid the toll?

Yes, if you wish to avoid the toll for the Parrissal Walkways, there is an alternative route available. You have the option of passing through the Moletes d'Arany. This itinerary is known for its great scenic beauty and branches off just before reaching the footbridges, offering a different but equally rewarding experience.
