It is believed that the rocky block on which Roccapelago stands was an ancient prehistoric castle. The first mention of a "Castrum Pelago" is found in a document dated 753. Roccapelago probably belonged to the Gualandelli family since the 12th century, and was subsequently a fiefdom of the Montegarullo family from 1240, whose warlike politics it suffered, especially under Obizzo da Montegarullo. In 1393, Obizzo having rebelled against the Este family, Roccapelago was besieged by the Lucchese allies of the house of Este, who took possession of the castle. In 1396 Obizzo managed to regain possession of it and Roccapelago remained with the Montegarullo family until 1408 when a powerful military contingent, under the command of Uguccione dei Contrari, managed to capture it and take it prisoner to Ferrara. In 1586, the new church of Roccapelago was built on the perimeter of the now abandoned castle. The square, massive shape, without arches, without columns and without vaults suggests that its room had been the hall of the Obizzo manor. The bell tower was built at the expense of the population in 1765, using a tower from the old castle. Other restoration works were carried out in 1925 due to damage from an earthquake. Four ancient rooms have recently been recovered which currently house the "In the footsteps of Obizzo da Montegarullo" and "The Mummies of Roccapelago" museums. Fortezza delle Verrucole: Very imposing medieval fortress. From its walls you have a really fantastic view of the surrounding area. Mondays are days off here, otherwise the opening times depend on the season. The opening times and admission prices can be found here: https://www.fortezzaverrucolearcheopark.it/it/informazioni.html However, I cannot really recommend the museum of the castle.

A location that everyone looks forward to. Here people are asked to kiss with the 13th century Rocca del Castello in the background. A place to share in good company. Beautiful panoramic views show the strategic importance of this fortress.

If you are in the area by mountain bike, it is a must. If you want you can go down to Carpineti following the Mantua-Lucca path. If you want to carry the bike on your shoulder, you can also go to San Vitale.

The Villa Minozzo region is rich in history, but you won't find many fully intact, grand castles. Instead, you'll discover historical architectural elements, the remains of ancient fortifications, and fortified settlements. These sites, like the ancient fortress in the hamlet of Minozzo, offer a glimpse into the area's medieval past and its unique building practices, even if only wall ruins or towers remain.
Among the most recommended sites are Carpineti Castle, a key part of Matilde di Canossa's fortified system with intact fortifications and a church. Another significant site is Montefiorino, a settlement featuring an imposing medieval fortress that now houses two museums. Don't miss Rocca di Roccapelago, believed to be an ancient prehistoric site with a church built on its perimeter and unique mummy museums.
Yes, the Verrucole Fortress in San Romano in Garfagnana is a very imposing medieval fortress that underwent extensive conservative and reconstructive restoration, completed in 2012. It's now regularly open to visitors as part of the Fortezza Verrucole Archeopark project.
Many of these sites offer breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Apennine landscape. For instance, Carpineti Castle provides a stunning view of the Secchia valley and Mount Cusna. Similarly, the Verrucole Fortress offers fantastic views from its walls.
Yes, several sites offer cultural insights. The medieval fortress at Montefiorino houses two museums dedicated to the Resistance and local history. At Rocca di Roccapelago, you can explore the 'In the footsteps of Obizzo da Montegarullo' and 'The Mummies of Roccapelago' museums, which are housed in recovered ancient rooms.

The best time to visit is generally during the spring, summer, and early autumn months (April to October) when the weather is milder and more conducive for exploring outdoor sites and trails. During these periods, you'll also find that restaurants and other amenities are more likely to be open.
While specific amenities vary by site, Carpineti Castle, for example, has a restaurant open during the season. The main town of Villa Minozzo and its various hamlets offer cafes, pubs, and accommodation options. It's advisable to check availability and opening times in advance, especially outside of peak tourist season.
Policies regarding dogs can vary significantly between individual sites and their surrounding areas. While many outdoor trails in the Reggio Emilia Apennines are dog-friendly, it's best to check directly with each specific castle or historical site regarding their internal access rules for pets before your visit.
Even though Villa Minozzo's main town was altered by WWII, it still preserves notable architectural features. You can see a wide ogival arch from the 17th century and a commendable 15th-century portal with an engraved cross. In the southern part of the hamlet, there's a building facade with an ogival portal from the early 19th century, which once opened to an underground passageway. Many other hamlets also feature ancient buildings from the 15th, 17th, and 19th centuries.
The time needed depends on the site. For places like Verrucole Fortress or Montefiorino with museums, you might want to allocate 2-3 hours. For sites that are primarily ruins or viewpoints, an hour or less might suffice. If you plan to combine a visit with hiking, factor in additional time for the trails.
