The dam was built on the Bode as an 18 m high concrete gravity dam for drinking water supply and flood protection, with a war-related interruption from 1939 to 1943 and 1952 to 1956, but is also used to raise low water levels and generate electricity. The hydroelectric plant has a nominal output of 60 kW and generates 0.18 GWh per year.
The slightly curved wall is 108 m long and has a volume of 13,500 m³. It can be overflowed almost across its entire width. A fishbelly flap is installed in one field, which can be lowered by 1.5 m to relieve flooding.
The reservoir has a volume of 1.2 million m³ and covers an area of 32 hectares. Part of the water is channeled from here through a 1,795 m long tunnel to the Rappbode Dam. The other part flows into the Bode to the Wendefurth dam, where it rejoins the water from the Rappbode dam.
