Broholm Castle is located in the beautiful landscape of South Funen. With its towers, moat, and park, it seems to have stepped straight out of a fairytale. Broholm's history can be dated back to 1326. Over time, the castle changed owners several times, finally coming into the possession of the Sehested family in 1730, to whom it now belongs in the 13th generation. The castle gave its name to a rare Danish dog breed, the Broholmer. Chamberlain N.F.B. Sehested bred this breed until 1850, thus ensuring its spread in Denmark. The castle also gave its name to the apple variety Broholm Æblet, also called Broholm Rosenæble. The mother tree, whose age could be traced back to 1866, stood in the castle park. Today, several of these apple trees can be found in the park and meadows around the castle. Ulriksholm is a privately owned castle that formerly belonged to the illegitimate king's son, Ulrik Christian Gyldenløv. In 1616, King Christian IV purchased the main estate of Skinnerup at the foot of Kerteminde Nor. In 1632, the king decided to build new stately buildings as a residence for the illegitimate king's then two-year-old son, Ulrik Christian Gyldenløve. Therefore, the castle's name was changed to Ulriksholm. After the death of Christian IV, his lover and mother of Ulrik Christian Gyldenløve, Vibeke Kruse, fell into disgrace. After her death, Vibeke Kruse was buried on a poor farm outside the city walls of Copenhagen. However, Ulrik Christian Gyldenløve ensured that his mother's body was brought to Kølstrup Church. He himself died at the age of just 28 after a brave service in the Swedish War. The castle is now privately owned. Schloss Egeskov is a very worthwhile moated castle in Kværndrup on the Danish island of Funen. The structure, still characterized by the Middle Ages, transformed over the course of its history from an externally late Gothic, internally already Renaissance-style moated castle into a comfortable country palace. The building is surrounded by extensive gardens (the largest historical garden complex in Denmark) and several museums are located on the castle grounds. The castle was built by the imperial marshal Frands Brockenhuus (1518–1569) and completed in 1554. The most important part of the museum facilities is the Renaissance castle itself.
