Broholm Castle is located in the beautiful landscape of South Funen. With its towers, moat, and park, it seems to have stepped straight out of a fairytale. Broholm's history can be dated back to 1326. Over time, the castle changed owners several times, finally coming into the possession of the Sehested family in 1730, to whom it now belongs in the 13th generation. The castle gave its name to a rare Danish dog breed, the Broholmer. Chamberlain N.F.B. Sehested bred this breed until 1850, thus ensuring its spread in Denmark. The castle also gave its name to the apple variety Broholm Æblet, also called Broholm Rosenæble. The mother tree, whose age could be traced back to 1866, stood in the castle park. Today, several of these apple trees can be found in the park and meadows around the castle. The small, juicy apples are used, among other things, to make apple brandy, which is available at the castle. https://www.visitfyn.de/fyn/reise-ideen/schloss-broholm

July 19, 2025, Ulriksholm Castle

Ulriksholm is a privately owned castle that formerly belonged to the illegitimate king's son, Ulrik Christian Gyldenløv. In 1616, King Christian IV purchased the main estate of Skinnerup at the foot of Kerteminde Nor. In 1632, the king decided to build new stately buildings as a residence for the illegitimate king's then two-year-old son, Ulrik Christian Gyldenløve. Therefore, the castle's name was changed to Ulriksholm. After the death of Christian IV, his lover and mother of Ulrik Christian Gyldenløve, Vibeke Kruse, fell into disgrace. After her death, Vibeke Kruse was buried on a poor farm outside the city walls of Copenhagen. However, Ulrik Christian Gyldenløve ensured that his mother's body was brought to Kølstrup Church. He himself died at the age of just 28 after a brave service in the Swedish War. The castle is now privately owned. There is no public access to the castle or gardens, except during the castle's open garden events and when visiting the castle as part of the Herregårdsspil (Herregårds Festival). https://www.visitkerteminde.de/kerteminde/reiseplanung/ulriksholm-schloss-gdk613635

June 24, 2025, Egeskov Slot

Egeskov Castle is a major tourist attraction in Denmark because it is the most beautiful and best-preserved moated castle in all of Europe. For over 450 years, Egeskov has been situated in a scenic setting in the south of the island of Funen. The main building, completely surrounded by water, was built by Frands Brockenhuus and completed in 1554. He was a wealthy landowner and needed a fortress that was difficult to conquer to protect against raids, so he had it built in the middle of a marshy area. To fortify the foundation, an entire oak forest was felled, and the piles were driven into the lake bed. The castle is surrounded by a unique and award-winning park that immediately captivates every visitor. https://www.medienwerkstatt-online.de/lws_wissen/vorlagen/showcard.php?id=21736

Schloss Egeskov is a very worthwhile moated castle in Kværndrup on the Danish island of Funen. The structure, still characterized by the Middle Ages, transformed over the course of its history from an externally late Gothic, internally already Renaissance-style moated castle into a comfortable country palace. The building is surrounded by extensive gardens (the largest historical garden complex in Denmark) and several museums are located on the castle grounds. The castle was built by the imperial marshal Frands Brockenhuus (1518–1569) and completed in 1554. The most important part of the museum facilities is the Renaissance castle itself. Inside, about ten magnificent rooms on two floors and an exhibition area in the attic can be visited. A large number of exotic hunting trophies bear witness to the hunting passion of a former lord of the castle. Furniture, paintings, musical instruments, porcelain, and many other art objects document the long history of the house, whose owners

Broholm Castle is incredibly idyllic with a park, a manor lake, moats and a watermill just west of Nyborg-Svendborg Road (163) halfway between Hesselager and Oure. In front of the castle lake is the museum "Chamberlain N.F.B. Sehested's Collection of Antiques" with 60,000 ancient artifacts, now run by Museum Svendborg & Surroundings. https://www.visitsvendborg.de/svendborg/svendborg/broholm-slot-gdk1088307
