An interesting pool/lake, generated by spring water, I hypothesize that it owes its name (Nera) to the fact that its waters have an apparently blackish color, both because it is located in a basin covered by nearby cliffs and because the reeds covering its edges darken its color even further.

Thanks for the info Marco, could the path that passes through Razzalto and leads to Moscheta be an alternative to do by MTB? (I see that the first stretch has a steep slope)

Hi Penna 1973, I also thought about doing this route on a mountain bike but after having done it on foot on an excursion I gave up because there would be too many stretches to cover with the bike on your shoulder (at least at my level) that I wouldn't have enjoyed.

the beauty of the Tuscan landscape together with the natural phenomena of the sulphurous spas with spontaneous springs in the woods, the Mediterranean scrub, the cave where Maurizio spent 13 years of his life as a hermit at the beginning of the 1900s, make this ring an interesting, beautiful and feasible excursion from everyone

While Florence itself doesn't have traditional canyons, the surrounding Tuscany region offers diverse geological formations. You can find deep limestone gorges like Orrido di Botri, unique sand and clay formations such as the Balze del Valdarno, and river sections with waterfalls and natural pools like Pozzo Sfondato.
Yes, several options cater to families. Rio Buti, near Prato, is considered ideal for families and beginners looking to try canyoning, featuring caves and small waterfalls. Additionally, Gorga Nera Pond and Maurizio's Caves in Gambassi Terme are listed as family-friendly highlights, offering unique natural and historical experiences.
The Balze del Valdarno are particularly unique, featuring spectacular rock formations of sand and clay sculpted by erosion into natural towers and pinnacles, resembling a 'lunar landscape.' Orrido di Botri is another notable geological wonder, a deep limestone gorge with walls up to 200 meters high, carved by the Pelago Torrent.
Pozzo Sfondato is a wild place where the Evola River flows over volcanic rocks, forming small waterfalls and natural wells perfect for cooling off on hot days. Gorga Nera Pond is another interesting pool generated by spring water, known for its unique dark appearance.
Maurizio's Caves in Gambassi Terme offer a blend of nature and history, featuring figures chiseled into the stone by a hermit who lived there in the early 1900s. The Balze del Valdarno are also historically significant, having inspired artists like Leonardo da Vinci with their dramatic landscapes.
Beyond exploring the gorges themselves, the region offers various outdoor activities. You can find gravel biking routes, waterfall hikes, and road cycling routes. Canyon Park near Bagni di Lucca also provides adventurous experiences like zip-lining and natural slides within a canyon setting.
Access to Orrido di Botri, one of the most famous gorges, is generally permitted from mid-June to mid-September. For other river-based spots like Pozzo Sfondato, summer is ideal for cooling off in the water, though some areas might experience lower water levels in August. Always check local conditions before your visit.
For Orrido di Botri, trekking shoes and helmets are often mandatory due to slippery ground and frequent river crossings. For Maurizio's Caves, ropes are available to assist with descent in wet conditions. Always wear appropriate footwear for hiking and be prepared for varied terrain.
Yes, the Balze del Valdarno offer numerous panoramic viewpoints across their unique 'lunar landscape' formations. Additionally, the Scenic Section of the Santerno River is noted for its beautiful views of limestone, mudstone, and steep slopes, often enjoyed from cycle paths.
Visitors appreciate the unique blend of nature and history, such as the chiseled figures in Maurizio's Caves. The opportunity to cool off in natural river pools like Pozzo Sfondato is also a highlight, as are the beautiful walks and scenic landscapes found in places like Val d'Inferno.
While specific crowd levels can vary, exploring areas like Rio Buti, which carves out natural scenery in the isolated mountainous area of Calvana, might offer a more tranquil experience compared to more well-known tourist spots. The Scenic Section of the Santerno River is also described as having little traffic, allowing for a peaceful appreciation of the landscape.
