Stenata is the second lowest Vitosha peak above 2000 m. It is easily accessible from the gravel road leading to Cherni vrah. Stenata provides beautiful views in all directions making it a great spot to hang out.

There are various of names of the peak, that are effectively synonyms: Bachun, Bachul, etc. It has to be noted that the signs are referring to Bachul (Бачул in Bulgarian). Further there are at least 3 peaks with the same name close one to another: Small Bachun, Middle Bachun and (big) Bachun. The late is surprisingly by certain 5 meters lower than the middle one. There is another (kind of a) peak marked with the Bulgarian flag that some tourists consider being Bachun - the distance from there to middle Bachun is less than 10 min and from there to Bachun - another 5-10 min.

The peak is actually a wide plateau. Great place for a short break with a beautiful view. If you don't feel like walking much, there is a dirt road near the peak. It exists on Google Maps.

This is one of the hidden gems of Vitosha. It is relatively easy accessible - you should walk a small ski piste from Ostritsa hut (60 m. ascent) and then there is a tiny (not so easy to find) path to the peak. The view is incredible but the best thing is that the chance to meet somebody there is very small so it is your private view to Studena dam, Kladnica, Rutartsi and Marchaevo and a beautiful landscape.

In Bulgaria we call it "gliganing" ("wild boaring") because there is no path through the mountain pine/pinus mugo ("Chernata skala" peak is rounded by mountain pine and there is no way to workaround it). Very good views - Cherni vrah, Sofia, Kopitoto and many Vitosha huts. Really really nice, but keep in mind that it is hard for walking. Smart people (not like me) uses long pants for this tour in order to easily pass the mountain pine. It is very rare to meet people on the upper part of this track. Check the tour: https://www.komoot.com/tour/197282573/zoom : There is no path or the path is not visible from the river to the forest. In the forest there is a nice visible path. After the forest there is a path from time to time but then when the mountain pine starts to enclose the peak - the path is lost and you start fighting with it alone. I hurried on my way back so I wasn't looking for a path there (it might be (or not) such path available on this side).

For breathtaking panoramic views, consider visiting Kamen Del Peak, which provides extensive views over Sofia and is frequently seen from the city. Another excellent choice is Cherni Vrah Peak, the highest point of Vitosha Mountain, offering vistas of Sofia, Rila Mountain, and other major Bulgarian ranges. From Polovrak Peak in Lozen Mountain, you can enjoy magnificent views of the Sofia Plain, Rila, Vitosha, Plana, the Balkan Range, and the Iskar Dam on clear days.
Vitosha Mountain is Sofia's most iconic and accessible mountain, often called the city's 'green lung.' Its peaks, such as Cherni Vrah Peak and Kamen Del Peak, are easily reachable by car, public transportation, or lift. Lyulin Mountain and Lozen Mountain are also situated close to Sofia, offering tranquil hiking experiences within a day's reach.
Yes, Vitosha Mountain offers several family-friendly options. The Golden Bridges (Zlatnite Mostove) features a unique 'river of stones' and is a popular spot for picnics, easily accessible and suitable for families. The Dendrarium Park within Vitosha Nature Park has accessible eco-trails and a rope garden, perfect for all ages. For a less crowded experience, Lyulin Mountain's Eco-trail Path of Health (Pateka na Zdraveto) starting from Bankya is also a good choice.
Vitosha Mountain is home to several notable natural features. You can visit the Boyana Waterfall (Boyanski Vodopad), Vitosha's highest waterfall at 25 meters, especially impressive during snowmelt. The Golden Bridges (Zlatnite Mostove) is a unique natural phenomenon with a 'river of stones' formed during the last Ice Age. Additionally, Cherni Vrah Peak itself is a natural monument.
The mountain peaks in the Sofia-City Region, particularly Vitosha, Lozen, and Lyulin, offer diverse experiences throughout all four seasons. Autumn brings beautiful foliage, and winter offers opportunities for winter hiking, though some trails may be more challenging.
Yes, near the mountain peaks, you can find historical and cultural sites. The Boyana Waterfall on Vitosha Mountain can be combined with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Boyana Church. On the northern slopes of Lyulin Mountain, the Divotinsky Monastery 'St. Trinity' is an 11th-century cultural monument and one of the oldest and best-preserved monasteries around Sofia. Lozen Mountain also has historical significance, with legends suggesting St. John of Rila once walked through the area, and medieval fortresses once defended Sofia along its ridges.
For a challenging ascent, consider the hike to Cherni Vrah Peak, the highest point of Vitosha Mountain, which can be a moderate 1.5 to 2-hour ascent from Aleko Hut. Chernata Skala Peak and Samara Peak are also categorized as challenging options within the region.
Beyond hiking, the Sofia-City Region offers various outdoor activities.
