Strečno Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle from the turn of the 13th and 14th Centuries was created as a guard structure on the road to Turiec, where tolls were collected. Originally it consisted of a castle tower and a small space surrounded by a wall. Through several reconstructions it has gradually become the best fortified castle in the Horné Považie region. The most famous owners were František Vešeléni, later Hungarian palatine, and his wife Zofia Bosniaková. The castle was demolished in the 17th Century by the order of Emperor Leopold I. In the 1970s it became a national cultural monument, and after extensive reconstruction work in 1995, was again opened to the public. One of the exhibits is a figurine of Žofia Bosniaková after death, located in the castle chapel. In 2013, the medieval village of Paseka grew up below the castle, consisting of five wooden houses. The village has a functional belfry, well, playground for children and a relaxation zone.

Bytča Castle

Highlight • Castle

The chateau, the Renaissance treasure of the city of Bytč, deserves the attention of visitors to northwestern Slovakia. It is one of the few Renaissance palaces in Slovakia that has retained its original appearance, unchanged by subsequent reconstructions.

It was built in the years 1571-1574 on the older gothic foundations of a water castle. A massive building with a square floor plan with a courtyard in the middle, arcades and round towers. The walls of the arcades are decorated with wall paintings - images of voivodes. In the middle of the north wing rises a six-story tower with Renaissance ornaments made of graphite.

The next building in the palace complex is the so-called The wedding palace, one of a kind in Slovakia, built in 1601 by its owner, the Hungarian palotine Juraj Thurzo. The wedding feasts of his seven daughters took place in the palace. Currently, there are exhibition rooms here, and the palace is the seat of the State Regional Archives.
At the beginning of the 18th century, Juraj Janosik, a Slovak folk hero, served as a soldier in the palace in Bytčy.

Likava Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

The entry is about 4€/adult. There is access to one part of the castle inside, where you can read about the history. Majority of the castle to the left however is not accessible. There are some benches inside and outside for you to rest on. The view is great, if a little damaged by the motorway being built underneath. There should also be a dirt path outside the castle that will take you around it, and the views should be great. It started to rain for us, so we didn’t manage to do that bit

Little hard climb to get there on top but worth it. Check also the small cute park before arriving at the gate of the castle.

Orava Castle It is considered one of the best-preserved castles in Slovakia and even in Europe. The first Dracula film, Nosferatu, was filmed here in 1921. However, back then, his name was Count Orlok. Absolutely worth seeing. We used the castle's free app for the audio tour, which I highly recommend.
