Highlight • Waterfall

For me one of the most beautiful corners of the circular route - waterfall and stream cross here and there is a bench to rest on a small island in the stream.

A small stone house and from it a brook gushes over stone steps. Two small headlights are aimed at it. The background to this? No idea. Maybe someone else knows the answer.

The waterfall can only be reached on foot. In the village of Wasserfall, a sign points the way to the Plästerlegge waterfall. From there it is about a 20-minute walk. The path to the waterfall is not accessible with a stroller. Below the waterfall, there is a viewing platform with a seating area, which invites you to take a break. There are also information boards about the "Plästerlegge" nature reserve. The Plästerlegge is located in a nature reserve - therefore, in the summer months, the view of the waterfall may be limited due to vegetation! Tip: If there is continuous frost for a long period in winter, the waterfall will partially freeze over. A very special sight. But beware: the path to the waterfall can be quite slippery then. We recommend sturdy winter/hiking boots and hiking poles or possibly shoe spikes. See: https://www.sauerland.com/de/neusta-pois/plaesterlegge-der-wasserfall-in-bestwig-wasserfall

The Silbecke Spring and Recreation Area also offers a family-friendly natural monument with water features.

What kind of natural features can I expect to see around the waterfalls?

Beyond the waterfalls themselves, you'll encounter diverse natural features. The region is characterized by scenic landscapes, steeply sloped valleys, and dense forests. You might also find natural monuments, lakes, and rivers, like the Ruhr, which features small cascades and rapids.

Are there hiking trails near the waterfalls in Hochsauerlandkreis?

You can find more hiking options in the region by exploring guides like Hiking in Hochsauerlandkreis.

What is the highest natural waterfall in Hochsauerlandkreis?

Are there any waterfalls that are particularly dog-friendly?

Yes, the Plästerlegge Waterfall is noted as dog-friendly, making it a great option for exploring with your canine companion. When visiting any natural area with your dog, always ensure they are kept on a leash and that you clean up after them.

How accessible are the waterfalls, and is there parking available?

Are there any artificial or man-made water features in the region?

Another is the Former Water Reservoir and Stepped Waterfall, which features a stream flowing over constructed stone steps, indicating an artificial design.

What do visitors particularly enjoy about the waterfalls in Hochsauerlandkreis?

The scenic beauty and the chance to unwind in nature are commonly praised.

Are there any hidden or lesser-known waterfalls worth exploring?

While the Plästerlegge is the most prominent, the Hochsauerlandkreis has many smaller, picturesque cascades and riverine features that offer a more secluded experience. The Helletal gorge in Winterberg, for instance, features smaller waterfalls and scenic spots along the Brücken- und Schluchtenpfad. Exploring local hiking trails often reveals these charming, less-trafficked water elements.

What should I wear for a waterfall hike in Hochsauerlandkreis?

For waterfall hikes in Hochsauerlandkreis, it's advisable to wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots, especially since trails can be muddy after rain, as noted for the Waterfalls and Creekside Bench on the Bridges and Gorges Trail. Layered clothing is recommended to adapt to changing weather conditions, and a waterproof jacket is always a good idea, particularly during autumn or spring when water flow is strongest.
