Hahnheide Forest House

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Hahnheide is a forested moraine landscape in the east of the municipality of Trittau.
In the Middle Ages, the Hahnheide, the name means "Hohe Heide", was still associated with the Sachsenwald. Due to the economic use until 1821, the forest population shrank more and more. Reforestation began in the middle of the 19th century, so that today 95% of the area is forested again. The area was protected in 1938.

The Great Hahnheider Berg (99 m above sea level) is located in the 1,450 ha area. A wooden lookout tower named after the former mayor Otto Hergenhan “Langer Otto” was built there in 1974 and rebuilt in 2001 with a height of 27 m. The highest elevation, however, is the Kleine Hahnheider Berg, which, curiously, is 100.1 m above sea level. NN is a little higher than its directly opposite counterpart.

The road through the Hahnheide from Trittau to Hohenfelde, laid out in the 18th century, consists of a paved part on one side and an unpaved so-called summer path on the other. It is now a listed building.
A 25 hectare area of Hahnheide has been designated as a natural forest cell since 1982.
