Don’t know where to have a walk or a run when in Nittel? Without a doubt go there. The view is nice and there are a lot of small paths to the left or right to explore, including a small (maybe dangerous) cave in the rocks. It’s also a part of the Moselsteig that leads to the forest and more!

From the direction of Windhof, the Moselsteig Trail first goes down along the rocks with a view of the high rock walls and then parallel on a narrow path back above the rocks. Very nice section of the trail. We walked the piece in January afternoon in the sunshine. A pleasure, with great views and lots of sun! The upper path can be slippery and muddy depending on the weather.

Directions The hike begins at the parking lot in front of the hermitage. From the parking lot we head towards the old village church and turn right to the Elisensitz viewpoint. Behind the church, the tour leads over a small piece of the cemetery of honor and past the entrance to the hermitage. Continue across the meadow and a path past the Roman theater to reach the forest. A narrow path winds through varied forest passages and after a few meters you reach the first viewing point with a wonderful view of the Saar valley and the small wine-growing town of Serrig. You climb down steep steps, past bizarre rock formations made of sandstone and reach the “Hedgehog Rock” via the “North Gate of the Romans”. The path winds along vertical rock faces down to the “Klausenfels”, where the stone cross of the grave chapel sits enthroned. Mighty rock bastions crisscrossed with crevices and caves line the path. The path now leads in a southwesterly direction to the striking, powerful “Round Tower”. In a constant up and down you reach a junction to the “Altfels”. Through the idyllic Pinschbachtal, the route continues through forest with wonderful views of the steep rock faces of the Kasteler Plateau, over serpentines and a light-flooded spruce forest to the striking old rock massif. You reach the flat summit plateau on thick wire ropes and over carved steps in the rock and are rewarded with a fantastic view over the Saar Valley to the Hunsrück heights. You climb up a ridge to the highest point of the hike. You continue downhill along paths and paths After a few forks you reach the Pinschbach. After crossing the stream you go uphill again towards the sandstone cliffs and you reach the small town of Kastel. You walk through an archway and reach the “Mariengrotte”. Steep steps take you to another refuge. Below it, a path leads past ponds and a narrow path leads steadily up and down past the “Franzenknippchen” and “Felsentor”. A signpost now leads through the “Römertor” which leads to another rest area on a small plateau. From here you return to the familiar path to the “Klause”.

Hinkelsgret Place of refuge for the Mannebachers and Kümmerner during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). The name "Hinkel" comes from the term "Henkel", a handle for a vessel that was used to transport household items and food into the ravine/Gret in case of danger from the approaching Swedish troops. The area around Mannebach only became involved in the war late - around 1630. Source: Text information board of the Mannebach local community
