Rittersdorf Castle

Highlight • Castle

Rittersdorf Castle has remained almost unadulterated since it was built and conveys an impressive picture of late medieval and modern Renaissance living culture. The approximately 700-year-old moated castle is located three km north of Bitburg in Rittersdorf. It houses a small local history museum and the registry office (branch office) of the Bitburg-Land association municipality in the Gothic Knights' Hall. There is also a privately run restaurant with fine country cuisine. In terms of art history, the castle is particularly known for the elaborately designed archway.

Medieval banquets are held in the castle hall at regular intervals. After the welcome by the lord of the castle and his servants, squires and maids in medieval costumes serve food and drink. Banquet singers, jugglers and the authentically set knights' table contribute to the medieval atmosphere. Of course you can enjoy a fine country kitchen and a first-class wine in the stylishly furnished rooms of the restaurant.

Malberg Castle

Highlight • Castle

Malberg Castle is a baroque castle in the Malberg community in the Eifel district of Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate. The palace complex is located above the village on the elongated headland of a basin on the large Kyllschleife in the Kyllburger Waldeifel. The landmark, visible from afar, is a baroque Palladio reception that is unique in Rhineland-Palatinate, as it is modeled on the Villa Valmarana in Italy designed by the famous architect.
The complex owes its current appearance to Cologne's auxiliary bishop and vicar general Johann Werner von Veyder, who at the beginning of the 18th century had a simple Renaissance building redesigned and supplemented with various buildings in the Baroque style. Through the marriage of the heir's daughter Ernestine von Veyder, the castle came into civil possession. From 1989, the Kyllburg Association was the owner. Together with the Förderverein Schloss Malberg e.V., founded in 1996, she had the facility secured, repaired and restored piece by piece and with the help of funding in the millions. Today's owner is the Verbandsgemeinde Bitburger Land, into which the Verbandsgemeinde Kyllburg was merged in mid-2014.

Celtic Fortress Wachenbach

Highlight • Historical Site

Celtic fortress Wachenbach
Spangdahlem, community Spangdahlem
description
Location on a mountain spur above the Kailbach. Probably bailey to a larger castle on today's airfield (lost). Such a main castle is due to the expansion of the airport, today only detectable by circumstantial evidence.

Celtic "Vorburg Wachenbach"
Ring-shaped walls, sandstone, ringwall diameter about 400 meters. The estimable wall width varies between 1 and 5 meters. Wall height even today, sometimes even higher than 0.5 meters. Probably type "Murus gallicus" or similar. Sandstone processing for beam support seems demonstrable. According to the stone spread estimated original wall height 2 - 4 meters. Formats of recognizable single stones in the majority between 30 and 50 cm. Largest recognizable stone with a length of approx. 1.50 meters (foundation stone, gate enclosure or similar)

Condition: heavily mossy and wooded, weathered branches.

It seems as if between the Celtic castle and the Roman reference site (kulturdb.de/einobjekt.php?id=10344;) could have existed a route connection. [1]

Here you have created a great rest area with a wave lounger in an exposed position that offers a wonderful view of Rittersdorf, with the castle and the church of St. Martin.
There is also a large cross here, but unfortunately I could not find out anything about its origin and meaning. Nevertheless, it was adorned with a fresh floral arrangement.

🌊 The Nims River The Nims is an idyllic river that flows through the Bitburg-Prüm district in the Eifel region: The Nims is an approximately 61 km long left tributary of the Prüm. It rises near Weinsheim and flows south, past towns such as Schönecken and Bitburg, before joining the Prüm below Irrel.

Rittersdorf Castle, a charming moated castle dating back to the 13th century, was first documented in 1263. Originally built as a fortified house for the Abbey of St. Maximin in Trier, it served to secure the trade routes between Trier, Bitburg, and Cologne. The imposing 26-meter-high keep, whose construction was approved by King Rudolf of Habsburg in 1290, still dominates the castle's appearance today. In the 16th century, the complex was expanded to include residential buildings with round towers. Today, the castle houses a restaurant, a small museum, and even a registry office, located in the historic Knights' Hall.
