May 8, 2026, Lakkos Mygerou Trailhead and Shelter

No idea if you can sleep here. Didn't look like it. Parking spaces and road are well developed. Relatively feasible tour to Psiloritis approx. 850m elevation gain and paths are visible. In April/May there is still snow on the path to the summit, which makes the tour a bit more challenging. I assume sure-footedness, a head for heights, normal fitness and appropriate footwear. Walking time there and back is about 4h

A dreamily situated mountain resort with attention to detail. Each cabin is individually and tastefully decorated. The main building/restaurant has a real mountain lodge feel. Several charming hiking trails, almost all of them circular, pass through this resort, making it worthwhile to spend a night or two there.

A stopover if you are on the way to Mitikas. Here you can buy food and drinks. Souvenirs and equipment are also available. If you need a helmet, you can rent one here. The landlady is very nice and she speaks English and German. You can not only stay in the hut, but you can also sleep in a tent if you have brought one with you.

You'll find basic shelters, fully equipped refuges with kitchens and dining areas, and even luxury cabins with amenities like pools and restaurants. These options cater to various preferences, whether you're seeking a challenging alpine adventure or a peaceful escape in nature.

Which huts are best for reaching the peaks of Mount Olympus?

For those aiming for the summit of Mount Olympus, several refuges serve as excellent bases. Spilios Agapitos Refuge 'A' is the oldest in the Greek mountains and a popular resting point along the E4 trail. Higher up, the Giosos Apostolidis Refuge, situated on the Muses plateau, is the highest fully-equipped refuge in Greece and a starting point for paths to nearby peaks like Mytikas. The Christos Kakalos Refuge is also a key stop for climbers due to its historical significance and proximity to the peaks.

Are there family-friendly huts in Greece?

Yes, several huts are known for their family-friendly atmosphere. For example, the Bafi Mountain Refuge is appreciated by visitors for its welcoming environment, cafe, and restaurant. The Melissourgoi Mountain Refuge in Tzoumerka also offers a playground, making it suitable for families.

What are some notable huts in Crete's White Mountains and Mount Psiloritis?

Crete features several significant mountain shelters. The Kallergi Hut on the Omalos Plateau is the best-known shelter in Lefka Ori, providing access to peaks and the Lefka Ori Mountain Desert. For those exploring Mount Psiloritis, the Lakkos Mygerou Trailhead and Shelter is an unmanned hut ideal for an early start to hike Crete's highest peak. The Toumbotos Prinos Mountain Shelter also offers accommodation for exploring Psiloritis.

The operating seasons for Greek mountain huts vary. Many refuges, especially those at higher altitudes like on Mount Olympus, operate from late May or early June through October. Some, like the Koromilia Refuge, operate daily during summer and on weekends during the rest of the year, weather permitting. Lower-altitude huts, such as the Dimitrios Boundolas or Stavros Refuge, may operate year-round with specific closing days. It's always best to check the specific hut's operating schedule before planning your trip.

Are there any huts that offer a more luxurious or comfortable stay?

The Melissourgoi Mountain Refuge in the same area offers breathtaking views and access to scenic hiking trails, often with fewer crowds.

Are there huts that require a challenging hike to reach?
