Historic timber chute in the Eng Gorge

Highlight • Historical Site

The wooden giant in the Eng bei Payerbach, which is more than seven kilometers long, was once one of the largest timber delivery systems in the Schneeberg area. The coveted raw material was brought down to it until the 1950s, when the "rule" of forest roads and trucks began. The City of Vienna Forest Service reconstructed part of the wooden transport trough that was assembled without a single nail. And now the forestry office has restored the monument - because it is undoubtedly one - for which it deserves praise.
Today it is difficult to imagine how laborious the labor of the wood servants was. There was a lot of hustle and bustle in the narrow, at the confluence of the Promiska trench - which the Federal Office renamed Mitterberggraben for some unknown reason - there was even a small tavern. In the meantime it has become quiet in the gorge-like Eng, except for the renovated piece, only remains of the old giant can be seen, but which evoke some memories.

Highlight • Gorge

The Mariensteig leads through the Eng in the Höllental and runs partly narrow and exposed along the rock faces. Steel cables secure the steeper passages, yet surefootedness and a head for heights are required. An impressive route that combines alpine character with beautiful views into the valley.

A nice trail through the forest, but surefootedness is still required; it's quite steep. A rope is provided for stopping throughout the more difficult section. No sandals, toddlers, or strollers recommended!

The "Eng" is a very picturesque gorge where you can still see reconstructions of the timber harvesting 150 years ago.

The Mariensteig is a mostly wide, well-secured and rather easy path that can also be walked by people with a fear of heights or children who are experienced in off-road terrain, with a wire rope providing additional safety.
