May 17, 2026, Oberer Waldsee

The Oberer Waldsee in Baden-Baden is a picturesque, artificially created lake in the middle of the quiet city forest. Nestled in nature, it offers a relaxed atmosphere and invites you to take relaxing walks away from the hustle and bustle. Located about 300 meters above the Unterer Waldsee, the idyllic spot is near the turn-off to Katzensteinstraße. Hiking enthusiasts particularly appreciate the lake as a beautiful stopover along popular trails such as the 5th stage of the Panoramaweg Baden-Baden or the route to the Stourdza Chapel. Several benches around the water offer the opportunity to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and the view of the still lake. Swimming is not allowed here, but it is precisely the untouched tranquility that makes the Oberer Waldsee a special natural spot for relaxation and short breaks in the green. The Solmsee is located on the Michaelsberg, between Schloss Solms and the Stourdza Chapel. Once built as a water reservoir, the lake is the oldest artificial lake in Baden-Baden; it owes its existence to the funds from the Badfonds. The Badfond was financed by a gaming tax, so from 1801 onwards, larger hotels in Baden had to pay a gaming tax at the behest of the Baden State. It benefited the Badfonds, with which the spa town could maintain many of the spa facilities and finance new ones. The small lake, which was originally surrounded by a wall, primarily served to supply the then newly built Friedrichbad with fresh spring water. The water from the springs was collected during the night and supplied to the Friedrichbad via a pipeline during the day. The pipeline was then decommissioned in the 1930s, probably for hygienic reasons.
