The Saut du Doubs is a 27-meter-high waterfall located along the Doubs River, which forms the border between France and Switzerland here. The waterfall is the result of a paleohistoric landslide that filled the narrow, gorge-like Doubs Valley, which cuts deep into the limestone formations of the Folded Jura, about 14,000 years ago.

By far the most beautiful stage of this route. The rocky path is a true experience. Incredibly beautiful. Tip: hike this stage very early in the morning when you're still alone. The peace and quiet and the very calm, dark-green water are almost meditative. It's not easy to put this place into words. Be sure to allow plenty of time.

Please note that most of the photos associated with the route are photos of the via ferrata and the names of the ladders themselves, which are very solid stairs and not rope bridges! It is perfectly feasible for hiking, even if the height can be disconcerting.

Pretty little rock arch through which the hiking trail leads. There are a few more of them on the Swiss side.

An interesting hiking experience to have two viewpoints 5m away and not be able to cross. The view is actually better on the French side 😉 The "Saut du Doubs" is a 27-meter-high waterfall on the Doubs, which is located on the French-Swiss border. During periods of flooding on the Doubs, kayak records have been set here for overcoming the waterfall.

This 500 meters long via ferrata with a 100 meters positive difference in altitude takes place on the French-Swiss border, in the grandiose and vertiginous setting of the Doubs gorges which for a long time sheltered the smuggling activities between these two countries. Very playful and vertiginous with ladders, footbridges, a zip line, cable and Nepalese bridges, it is certainly one of the most beautiful and impressive via ferrata of the region. After a few minutes of walking on a path, the course begins in the beautiful vertical limestone cliff by a first ladder soon followed by a Nepalese bridge, a beam and a slightly overhanging dihedral. This is the most physical part of the route, and it precedes the first escape route that leads to the Cendrée lookout. The next section offers a short, slightly overhanging passage, then a Tibetan bridge made of logs and a 42-meter-long "3-strand" cable bridge, both of which test your balance. The itinerary continues across a ledge (second possible escape route), takes a descending ladder, crosses a new cable bridge ("2 strands" this time), then goes up vertically by exploiting the weaknesses of the wall. The ladder and the beam that follow announce the long 60 meter zip line that can be avoided via the third escape route (but that would be a shame!). A last beam and a steep and original rope ladder bring you to the end of the via ferrata. A safe path follows the cliff, passes by the belvedere where you can still admire the superb landscapes, then follows the route of the smugglers of yesteryear before bringing you back to the parking lot. The region is home to several dramatic natural formations. The Saut du Doubs Waterfall is a major national site, resembling Canadian canyons with its magnificent landscapes. For a more adventurous experience, The Ladders of Death offers a challenging route with metal ladders and a via ferrata course suspended between cliffs. The Consolation Cirque is a remarkable natural amphitheater with cliffs over 350 meters high, providing a sense of geological grandeur.
The park offers a variety of hiking experiences, from serene paths along the Doubs River to more challenging routes. For instance, the area around The Ladders of Death provides a physically engaging experience with ladders and via ferrata sections. Other trails, like the one leading to the Ladder Trail and Waterfall, can be narrow, muddy, and involve crossing streams and climbing over rocks, offering a wild, Amazon-like feel. Many trails provide panoramic views of the deep gorges and wild natural areas.
Absolutely. Beyond the major sites, you can find unique formations like the Rock Arch on the Doubs Trail, through which hiking paths lead. The region is also characterized by its deep river gorges, natural amphitheaters, and waterfall-carved valleys. Many trails offer stunning viewpoints overlooking the Franco-Swiss border and the winding Doubs River.
The canyons and gorges are beautiful year-round, but each season offers a different experience. Spring and autumn provide pleasant temperatures for hiking and vibrant foliage. Summer is ideal for enjoying the shady gorges along the Doubs River, especially during hot days. After heavy rains, the waterfalls, such as those near the Consolation Cirque, become particularly impressive.
While some routes are challenging, there are areas suitable for families. The serene atmosphere of the Doubs Gorges, particularly along the tranquil waters of the Défilé d'Entreroches, can be enjoyed by canoe or kayak, offering a gentle way to admire the cliffs and forests. For hiking, look for less strenuous sections of trails, though specific 'family-friendly' categorizations for canyons are less common than for general trails.
The Parc Naturel Régional Du Doubs Horloger offers extensive opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. You can find numerous hiking trails, including the challenging 'Le Saut du Doubs — loop' or the 'Franco-Swiss Smugglers' Trail'. For running, routes like the 'Roche du Prêtre Trail' are available. Mountain biking is also popular, with trails such as the 'Singletrail on Mont Vouillot'. You can explore more options on the dedicated guides for Hiking, Running, and MTB Trails in the region.
The Doubs Gorges have historically formed a natural frontier between France and Switzerland. This area was once known for smuggling activities between the two countries, particularly along routes like the one near The Ladders of Death. Remnants of old mills along the Doubs River also illustrate the area's industrial past, showcasing how the river's power was harnessed.
Access to many natural sites, including the Saut du Doubs Waterfall, is generally open, with observation points available from both the French and Swiss sides. For more challenging routes like the via ferrata at The Ladders of Death, specific equipment and experience are required. While general permits for hiking are not typically needed, always check local regulations for specific activities or protected areas. Parking is usually available near popular trailheads and attractions.
Visitors frequently praise the magnificent landscapes and the feeling of being immersed in a wild, untamed environment. The serene atmosphere, the sound of the river, and the breathtaking views from various viewpoints are often highlighted. Many find the rocky paths and the deep green, calm waters almost meditative, especially when experienced early in the morning. The unique geological formations and the challenging yet rewarding trails also contribute to a memorable experience.
While the region is known for its deep gorges and river-carved landscapes, specific organized canyoning activities (which typically involve rappelling, jumping, and sliding through water-filled canyons) are less commonly highlighted compared to hiking or kayaking. The Défilé d'Entreroches, for example, is popular for canoeing and kayaking, offering a water-based experience through a canyon-like defile. If you are interested in technical canyoning, it is advisable to research specialized local guides or tour operators who might offer such activities in suitable areas.
The diverse landscapes of the Parc Naturel Régional du Doubs Horloger, including its canyons and forests, support a rich variety of wildlife. While specific sightings can vary, the lush environment is home to numerous bird species, and the sound of birdsong is often noted by visitors. Mammals typical of the Jura Mountains can also be found. The pristine river ecosystems support aquatic life, contributing to the overall biodiversity of the park.
Yes, the region has various villages and towns that offer amenities. You can find cafes, pubs, and accommodation options in communities located near the major canyon sites and within the Parc Naturel Régional du Doubs Horloger. These establishments cater to visitors exploring the natural beauty of the area, providing convenient bases for your adventures.
