Geologically interesting, enchanted, beautiful to look at.

The name is once again misleading: Of course, the local hiker knows that there are by no means several lakes visible from this spot. Rather, it is the "good old Father Rhine," which can be seen several times, seen here from above.

Small enchanted lake with isolated moorings. Created by former mining. The lake can be bathed in in summer. The approximately 1 kilometer long "Expedition Himberg" adventure trail around the lake offers children and families the opportunity to deal with exciting questions about sustainability.

The Weilberg is one of the many relics of the Siebengebirge from the time of the volcanoes that formed the landscape around 30 million years ago (Tertiary period). At that time, the volcanic activity began with a huge ash rain. Inside the earth was a huge magma focus that had created eruptions in various chimneys and crevices. Loose material was thrown explosively through these eruption sites to the earth's surface. This was deposited on the earth's surface and solidified into tuff. Lava penetrated the forming trachytuff layer and colored the tuff red at the contact zone. This can still be clearly seen today. The lava solidified into hexagonal basalt columns, often into slender columns. Later, liquid basalt penetrated the old tufa layer again in one passage and formed a "basalt tulip" at the upper end. Over the course of time, the destructive power of nature eroded the soft tuff layer through erosion, weathering and erosion. The hard layers of basalt resisted these forces and are therefore so close to the surface today that they were quarried. There are three large groups of volcanic rock in the Siebengebirge: 1. Trachyte (e.g. Drachenfels, Lohrberg) - used in the construction of Cologne Cathedral 2. Latite (e.g. Stenzelberg, Wolkenburg) - used for baroque building decoration 3. Basalts (e.g. Weilberg, Ölberg, Petersberg) - use e.g. B. for coastal reinforcement or as gravel for road and railway construction In the 19th and early 20th century, basalt was mined on the Weilberg, as in many other places in the Siebengebirge. The workers toiled for ten hours to extract the valuable stone by hand with hammers, crowbars, iron wedges or stone forks. It was particularly dangerous for the workers, who were lowered to the blast site on a rope. The extracted rock was transported to the nearby stone crushing plant. The workers loaded the mined rock into wagons and brought it down to the valley. From 1889, a narrow-gauge railway was built for transport, which led down into the Rhine Valley to the loading point on the ships. At weekends, she brought the day trippers to the Siebengebirge in passenger transport. Basalt was and is very popular for building roads, paths and railways, but also for bank and dike reinforcements (also in the Netherlands!). This quarry activity, which ended in 1942, offers the visitor a fantastic insight into times long past. Information boards give the visitor important information about the history of the origins of the volcanic landscape and the Weilberg, but also about the history of quarrying.

Yes, several spots are suitable for families. The Three-Lakes Viewpoint offers expansive views and is categorized as family-friendly. Another great option is the Himberger Lake, which also has a family-friendly rating and a narrow path around parts of it. The View of Dornheckensee is also family-friendly, offering a panorama of a basalt lake.

What kind of natural features can I expect to see around the lakes in Naturpark Siebengebirge?

The region is known for its volcanic origins, featuring former basalt quarry ponds and scenic viewpoints. You'll encounter deep quarry lakes like Himberger Lake and the Dornheckensee, often embedded in cliffs. Many viewpoints, such as the Three-Lakes Viewpoint, offer stunning vistas of the Rhine and the surrounding forested hills.

What are the hiking difficulty levels around the lakes in Naturpark Siebengebirge?

Hiking trails around the lakes vary in difficulty. Many viewpoints and lake paths are rated as 'intermediate', such as those around the Three-Lakes Viewpoint or the View of Dornheckensee. Some areas, like the Basalt quarry pond and cliffs on Großer Ölberg, can be more challenging with overgrown access and steep, potentially dangerous shores. You can find various hiking routes, including easy and moderate options, in the Easy hikes in Naturpark Siebengebirge and Hiking in Naturpark Siebengebirge guides.

Is swimming allowed in the lakes of Naturpark Siebengebirge?

Swimming conditions vary by lake. While Himberger Lake is sometimes used for bathing, it's at your own risk due to its depth and steep banks. For lakes like Dornheckensee and the Blue Lake (mentioned in tips for View of the Rhine Valley from the Ennert cliffs), signs indicate that swimming is prohibited due to dangerous undercurrents and crumbling rock from steep walls. These areas are also part of fauna-flora-habitat zones with strict supervision.

What is the best time of year to visit the lakes in Naturpark Siebengebirge?

The lakes and viewpoints in Naturpark Siebengebirge can be enjoyed year-round. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures for hiking and vibrant foliage. Summer is ideal for longer days and potentially some bathing at Himberger Lake (at your own risk). Winter can provide a unique, tranquil experience, especially for hiking, though some paths might be slippery.

Are there any circular walks around the lakes?

While specific circular walks directly around every single lake might be limited due to terrain (especially around quarry lakes with steep banks), many hiking routes in the Naturpark Siebengebirge incorporate lake views or pass by them. For example, the 'Three-Lakes Viewpoint – Lion castle ruins loop' is a moderate hike that includes the popular viewpoint. Are there any hidden gem lakes or less-known spots worth visiting?

While the main highlights are popular for a reason, the Basalt quarry pond and cliffs on Großer Ölberg offers a more rugged and less-trafficked experience. It's located on the less well-known east side of the Großer Ölberg and requires careful navigation due to overgrown access and steep shores. Nearby, you can find the 'Dittmanns Ruh' monument and rest area with beautiful views.

What do visitors enjoy most about the lakes and viewpoints in Naturpark Siebengebirge?

Visitors frequently praise the stunning panoramic views, especially from spots like the Three-Lakes Viewpoint, which offers vistas of the Rhine, Drachenfels, Bonn, and Cologne. It's advisable to check local listings or plan your route to pass by known establishments.

Can I bring my dog on walks around the Siebengebirge lakes?
