The detour to the ruin is worth it, especially to the ruin itself! The view is great, you look directly at the Maas.

From the castle of Neercanne, you can follow the stairs up to the entrance of the castle, where the terrace of Auberge Neercanne is located. The 52 steps are part of the baroque gardens on four levels and form a connection between the gardens and the castle.

Kasteel Neercanne or Château Neercanne, formerly known as Agimont Castle, is a seventeenth-century baroque castle in the Jekerdal valley in the southwest of the Dutch municipality of Maastricht. Neercanne is located on Cannerweg, just on Dutch territory, close to the Belgian-Limburg village of Kanne. Neercanne is the only terraced castle in the Netherlands, built on a man-made terrace against the slope of the Cannerberg. The reconstructed baroque garden is also laid out in terraces. The terraced garden has been gradually restored to its former glory since 1990. Both the terrace at castle level and the one at street level are furnished in a modern French style with boxwood and yew hedges, lawns, gravel paths, garden vases, and benches. Between them is a narrow middle terrace. At street level is the main garden, where sculpture exhibitions are regularly organized. Across the road, in the Jeker river basin, lies the only partially restored lowest level of the original garden. However, the distinct baroque shape of the large pond is clearly recognizable.

Very nice walking route along the chateau. Beautiful panorama. With a house in the valley below that used to be the border post.

Neercanne Castle was built on the original site of Roman fortifications, the caves of which still exist and are used as wine cellars. The original staircase with a banister on wide columns is still in the hall. The ceiling features relief depictions of weapon trophies. The castle is currently in use as a hotel and restaurant.

The closed farm you find here was built in the eighteenth century and was given the name Hoeve Lichtenberg. It was built on the grounds of the Lichtenberg castle, which had already fallen into disrepair. Since the nineteenth century, the keep of Lichtenberg castle has been part of the domain of the farm. That keep, or rather the tower and a small part of the wall, is located at the back left of the courtyard of the farm. You have beautiful views everywhere and the farm is also more than worth it in terms of heritage. You can also spend the night there. https://www.natuurmonumenten.nl/natuurgebieden/sint-pietersberg/hoeve-lichtenberg-met-ruine See also https://www.komoot.com/nl-nl/highlight/3122186
