Very lovely animals! In March 2026, we only found goats (and sheep) and llamas. Unfortunately, we did not discover the pigs.

The village of Velký Rybník was founded in the Middle Ages as a small farming village near an artificially created fishpond. The village originally consisted mainly of cottages, farms, and a few fishing huts. The village was part of the Egerland / Sudetenland, predominantly German-speaking until 1945. After the forced expulsion of the German population in 1944, most of the buildings were no longer inhabited and some were demolished. The village itself no longer exists. Only a few ruins, foundation walls, and fruit trees remain as reminders of the old settlement.

The Eger dam and the banks of the Eger form a beautiful green lung and recreational area for the town of Cheb.

For families, Lake Amerika is highly recommended, offering numerous hiking trails, an animal enclosure, boat rentals, and a bathing area. The Jesenice Reservoir also provides family-friendly amenities such as campsites with sports facilities, toboggans, and playgrounds. Near the Skalka Dam, the Goethův naučný lesopark (Goethe's educational forest park) offers interactive attractions suitable for children.
The Cheb District lakes offer a variety of water activities. The Skalka Dam is suitable for sport fishing and almost all kinds of water sports, with a pontoon swimming area in Podhoří. The Jesenice Reservoir, known for its clean water, is excellent for swimming, yachting, diving, fishing, and windsurfing. Motorboats are prohibited on Jesenice, ensuring a peaceful experience.
Yes, both the Skalka Dam and Jesenice Reservoir areas feature numerous hiking and cycling trails. The Jesenice Reservoir is particularly noted for its trails through surrounding forests. For cycling enthusiasts, you can explore various routes around the region, including those found in the Cycling around okres Cheb guide. Mountain biking options are also available, detailed in the MTB Trails around okres Cheb guide.
The Skalka Dam, located on the Ohře River, is popular for its proximity to Cheb and offers various water sports and fishing, though it can experience cyanobacteria issues in summer and mercury in fish. The Jesenice Reservoir, on the Odrava River, is the largest lake in Western Bohemia, known for its remarkably clean water and is ideal for swimming, yachting, and windsurfing, with motorboats prohibited. Jesenice also has more extensive camping and recreational facilities.
A highly recommended spot for panoramic views is View of the Skalka Reservoir from Chebská Stráž, which offers an outstanding vista over the Skalka Reservoir. Many trails around both Skalka and Jesenice also provide beautiful perspectives of the water and surrounding landscapes.
The lakes are set amidst diverse natural landscapes. You'll find extensive forests, particularly around the Jesenice Reservoir, which are perfect for nature walks. The Skalka Dam area includes the Goethův naučný lesopark. The region is characterized by its large reservoirs, offering expansive water bodies and varied shorelines, from sandy beaches to forested banks.
Near the Jesenice Reservoir, a point of interest is a partially submerged reinforced concrete bridge near Všeboř, which once connected parts of a village before it was flooded by the dam. The Skalka Dam itself, built in the 1960s, is a significant man-made structure. The region's history is also reflected in the spa town of Františkovy Lázně, which is close to Lake Amerika and Westend Park.
The Jesenice Reservoir is known for its remarkably clean water, making it a popular spot for swimming. The Skalka Dam has a pontoon swimming area, but high levels of cyanobacteria can sometimes complicate swimming during summer, and fish consumption is not recommended due to mercury concentrations. Both reservoirs offer good conditions for sport fishing, with pike, perch, catfish, and white fish commonly found in Jesenice.
The northern shore of the Jesenice Reservoir features campsites with various facilities, including refreshments. The Recreation area at the Eger Reservoir (referring to the larger reservoirs like Skalka/Jesenice) also offers campsites, guesthouses, bungalows, and cabins right on the water. You'll find cafes and pubs in nearby towns and villages.
Visitors frequently praise the diverse recreational opportunities, from water sports and fishing to hiking and cycling. The clean water of Jesenice Reservoir and the family-friendly attractions at Lake Amerika are often highlighted. Many appreciate the scenic beauty and the well-maintained facilities, as well as the numerous viewpoints offering stunning vistas over the reservoirs.
While specific public transport routes to every lakeside spot are not detailed, the Skalka Dam's proximity to Cheb makes it relatively accessible. For the Jesenice Reservoir and Lake Amerika, it's advisable to check local bus schedules from Cheb or Františkovy Lázně, as public transport options can vary.
Yes, Bílý Halštrov Lake is primarily for paying anglers, and hikers are reportedly not as welcome, with the dam often closed for pedestrian access. It's best to respect the local regulations and focus on the many other welcoming lakes and trails in the district.
