Ightham Mote

Highlight • Historical Site

In the 1920’s a wealthy American was called Charles Henry Robinson was cycle touring down this road and came across Igtham Mote and vowed that one day he would buy it. Thirty years later he did.
As cyclists I think we can all relate to riding around the country and spotting the house we dream about living in… although probably smaller

Knole House and Deer Park

Highlight • Castle

The 15th-century manor house is located in the 1,000-acre deer park Knole Park. The deer are used to passers-by. Knole itself is one of England's largest houses. Given in 1566 to Queen Elizabeth's cousin Thomas Sackville, the house is now probably best remembered due to his descendant Vita Sackville-West, English author immortalized in Virginia Woolf's novel "Orlando". On my own visit, the whole park was closed to foot and mouth disease, so unfortunately I have only seen it from afar.

Tonbridge Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

Sandwiched between the Kent Downs AONB and the High Weald AONB, the market town of Tonbridge has a lot to offer lovers of the outdoors. I’d recommend a visit to its 11th-century motte-and-bailey castle, whilst an amble along the banks of the Medway is beautiful, particularly in spring. Tonbridge can be reached in around 45 minutes from London Charring Cross.

July 5, 2025, Lullingstone Roman Villa

As of July 2025 the Villa is intermittently open, and free as walking around at ground level is not permitted (issues with mould). You can, however, see the site from a viewing window, & be told the history of the place. Stuart was my "guide" and was highly knowledgable and interesting.

As of Feb 2025, the castle is temporarily closed for restoration and has scaffold erected around it – but still an impressive sight.

Great view of the castle from the bridge over the River Medway. A motte-and-bailey castle was built on this site after the Norman conquest as further defence. The castle as it looks to today was built in the 13th Century, and the mansion was added in the 18th Century. The council now use the mansion for offices, but the castle is worth a visit.
