You feel like you're in the mountains. You can already hear the bells hanging on the Highland cattle from afar. If you're lucky, they'll be very close to the wooden walkways.

It was built in 1422 under Prince-Bishop Johann II von Heideck as one of two entrances and exits to the city. The tower is 26 meters high and has five stories and seven levels. From 1763 to 1939, a watchman (= watchman), who often doubled as the city bandmaster, occupied the tower. A thorough renovation began in 1974. In 1997, the local history society established the craftsmen's workshops here. The terrain around Pfofeld is characterized by low hills and extensive woods, with elevations generally not exceeding 446 meters (1,463 ft). You'll find routes that traverse a slightly hilly hinterland, often offering scenic views of the Franconian Lake District, including the Großer Brombachsee and Kleiner Brombachsee.
Yes, several routes are designed as loops. For example, the Spalt City Brewery – Schnittlinger Loch loop from Spalt is a moderate 8 km circular trail, and the Great Brombach Lake – Little Brombach Lake loop from Langlau offers a 12.3 km moderate experience around the lakes.
The routes often provide views of the Franconian Lake District, including the Großer Brombachsee and Kleiner Brombachsee. You might also encounter the European watershed, which runs through Pfofeld. For specific natural highlights, consider visiting the Müllersloch Gorge and Waterfall or the Sandstone Cave at Hörlberg, both accessible nearby.
While the term 'mountaineering' here refers to strenuous hiking, many trails are suitable for families with older children who are used to walking. Routes like the Spalt City Brewery – Schnittlinger Loch loop from Spalt are moderate and offer varied terrain through woodlands and open areas, which can be enjoyable for active families.
Generally, dogs are welcome on hiking trails in the Pfofeld region. However, it's always advisable to keep them on a leash, especially in nature reserves or areas with wildlife, and to respect local regulations. The routes traverse woodlands and open areas, providing good opportunities for walks with your canine companion.
Many trailheads in the Pfofeld area, particularly those near popular lakes and villages like Spalt or Langlau, offer designated parking facilities. It's recommended to check specific route descriptions on komoot for detailed parking information relevant to your chosen starting point.
Public transport options to reach trailheads around Pfofeld can be limited, especially for more remote starting points. However, some villages like Spalt and Langlau, which serve as starting points for routes such as the Jakobbuck – Galgenberg loop from Spalt, may have bus connections. Planning your journey in advance is recommended.
The region is best enjoyed from spring through autumn. During these seasons, the weather is generally mild, and the trails are clear. Spring brings blooming nature, while autumn offers beautiful foliage. Winter mountaineering is not typical for this region due to its low-lying, non-alpine character.
While not directly on every mountaineering route, the Roman Limes, a UNESCO World Heritage site, runs through the municipality of Pfofeld. You can find its course marked by steles, and a circular hiking trail with information boards allows visitors to follow Roman traces around Pfofeld. A reconstructed Roman bath is also located in nearby Theilenhofen.
The Igelsbachsee Dam – Brombachsee Dam and Panoramic Views loop from Allmannsdorf offers expansive views of both the Igelsbachsee and Brombachsee dams. This moderate 15.8 km route provides picturesque vistas across the lakes and the surrounding Franconian landscape.
Yes, for those seeking a more strenuous experience, the Jakobbuck – Galgenberg loop from Spalt is classified as difficult. This 18.4 km trail leads through hilly forests and features significant elevation gain, often taking around 5 hours and 15 minutes to complete.
