Marcin Kurzawski
September 7, 2025, Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk

The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk, built in 1727, is a central structure with an entrance on the south. The interior is topped by a dome with a lantern. Above the entrance is a cartouche with the monogram of the founder, Abbot Ludwik Bauch, and the date of construction – "LAL/1727." Just below the dome are oval windows, illuminating the chapel interior from above. The dome is topped by a small lantern, covered with a domed roof. The Baroque interior decoration of the chapel has not survived. In 1997, a wooden sculpture of St. John of Nepomuk was placed in the chapel. The chapel is active and in use. https://polska-org.pl/518175,Lubiaz,Kaplica_sw_Jana_Nepomucena.html

Europe's largest abbey. Only a small part can be visited; the rest is still in ruins. But it's a beautiful complex.

In former times, there was a ferry crossing the Oder at this spot. Directly adjacent is the entrance to the old Oder harbor. A memorial stone on the main street commemorates the 1997 Oder flood. A little further along the Oder, there are several flood markers from other years.

This is a typical photo motif. The Oder River in the foreground, and in the background, the imposing monastery building with its two towers. In the summer months, the short, steep path to the Oder is quite densely overgrown, as is the path along the Oder riverbank. You can walk right up to the Oder, but then the two towers disappear slightly behind the trees.

The church appears to be open outside of normal business hours and can be visited. Built in 1903, it is a rather unusual brick building. Directly adjacent to the church are sculptures of St. Nepomuk and St. Florian, as well as a memorial plaque to Pope John Paul II.

The Baroque Church of St. Valentine stands on a hill above the Oder River. A cemetery surrounds the church, which includes a gravesite for murdered Luxembourgers. The interior of the church is decorated with frescoes by Michał Willmann, one of Silesia's most important painters, also known as the "Silesian Rembrandt."
