It is the longest Himalayan footbridge in France, with 268 meters of suspension bridge 78 meters high, above the Lignon.

This work was thought from the outset as an eco-responsible site whose vocation is to make people discover the gorges with a minimum impact on the biodiversity of this protected natural space.

Saint Michael's Chapel

Highlight • Other

This very striking rock needle near Le Puy-en-Velay, crowned with a chapel, is dedicated to the Archangel Michael / Michel. After a strenuous day of pilgrimage it takes a little bit of effort to make the ascent here, but without exception all of our small group of pilgrims have conquered the steps and were thrilled by this simply designed Romanesque chapel, which offers a wonderful calm and prayer atmosphere .
About the patronage: The name Michael / Michel (coming from Hebrew) means "Who is like God?". He is often depicted - on paintings or as a statue - with a flaming sword, or occasionally a lance. Michael is - together with Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel - one of the four archangels who (according to human imagination) occupy the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the saints calendar is September 29th.

Saint-Privat-d'Allier

Highlight • Settlement

Saint-Privat-d'Allier majestically dominates the Allier gorges on the slopes of the volcanic massif of Devès and Durande.

Located between Le Puy en Velay and Saugues en Gévaudan, this village is the first stop on the way to Santiago de Compostela on the Via-Podiensis. Located on the borders of the historic provinces of Velay, Gévaudan and Auvergne and perched on a basalt spur, Saint Privat offers an exciting and surprising place to pass through or stay.

Its shops and accommodation offer the guarantee of a comfortable, warm and gourmet welcome.

Saint Madeleine Chapel

Highlight • Other

A text from 1312 recalls an oratory in the Monistrol region dedicated to Saint Madeleine. This may be today's cave chapel.
Bones of women and children as well as coins from the beginning of the 17th century were found in the graves carved into the rock to the right and left of the chapel.

The city is one of the oldest French centers for Marian pilgrimages and is picturesquely situated in the lovely volcanic area of the Velay and therefore has a corresponding cultural and touristic importance.
The aim of the Marian pilgrims was a black Madonna in Notre Dame Cathedral. The Saint-Michel-d'Aiguilhe church is one of the most important and - due to its exposed location on an old volcanic vent - one of the most striking buildings in the city, alongside the cathedral.
The pink Notre-Dame-de-France statue of Mary on the Corneille lava rock above the cathedral is also visible from afar.

Chapelle Saint-Jacques de Rochegude It is located at an altitude of 967 m. These remains are the last witness to an ancient fortress which dominated the Allier valley and the Gévaudan road and which also marked the border between the dioceses of Puy and Clermont.
Its main function was to control passageways.
The chapel faces east. Its bedside is rounded, and topped with a small comb bell tower. The interior, very modest, is composed of a choir at the end of the oven and a small nave.
A stop is necessary when you are on the way to Santiago de Compostela

North summit of Mont Mézenc

Highlight • Summit

North summit of the two-part Mont Mézenc with a great panorama, weather permitting.
At 1744m, it is the highest point in the Haute-Loire department. The southern peak already belongs to the department of Ardèche. The iron cross on the north summit was erected by French prisoners upon their return from German camps.
Like so many peaks in this region, the plateau is of volcanic origin. If you are lucky, you can see marmots on the mountain slopes.

You wouldn't expect to find an Eiffel bridge in the heart of Haute-Loire! The Eiffel company obtained the contract in 1887 for the construction of this bridge over the Allier river. It was completed in 1888, just after the construction of the Garabit viaduct and the framework for the Statue of Liberty in New York.

This structure helped to open up the village, while also providing it with an important economic network. The transport of materials, previously impossible in this mountainous and very isolated area at the time, was now feasible. The bridge was restored in the 2000s to maintain the local economy.

Statue of Our Lady of France

Highlight • Monument

High above the city and the surrounding area of Le Puy-en-Velay, the Mother of God - who is venerated here under the title "Notre Dame de France" - is enthroned in a very exposed position with the baby Jesus in her arms. The builders of the statue certainly wanted to ask Mary's blessing for the city and country.
