The terrain is nice, but the signage isn't great... we start a circuit (no. 5) and very quickly there are no more signs... Circuit no. 7 seems well signposted

Pyramidal circuit Follow the black arrows n°7, some of them are missing (the GPS tracks help to make the complete tour). There are also a few climbs/descents that are a little technical but short to avoid for real beginners but it's easy to do all the same. Some area a little muddy during rainy periods. I tried to get as close as possible to the original circuit or the arrows by doing the circuit several times & comparing the GPS tracks recorded and adding the missing paths on OpenStreeMap (sometimes the path of the map & the arrows differ a little, e.g. from the 1st entrance to the forest, the arrows pass a little lower than the path on the map, so I made a little mix between the 2, which adds a little climb ;) )

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of bike parks and trails can I find in Pas-de-Calais?

Pas-de-Calais offers a diverse range of cycling experiences. You'll find dedicated pumptracks, mountain biking trails on reclaimed mining slag heaps (known as 'terrils'), and scenic routes along the Opal Coast. These areas provide varied terrain, from skill-building circuits to challenging cross-country paths.

Are there any pumptracks in Pas-de-Calais suitable for skill development?

Yes, Pas-de-Calais features several pumptracks perfect for honing your bike handling skills. Notable examples include the Bois de Florimond Pumptrack, which offers speed sensations and is located near slag heaps for extended riding. The region also has facilities like Pumptrack Hersin-Coupigny and Pumptrack Labourse, designed for all ages and bike types to practice balance and coordination.

What are the 'terrils' and what kind of mountain biking do they offer?

The 'terrils' are former mining slag heaps that have been reclaimed by nature, transforming into unique mountain biking terrains. They offer significant elevation changes and varied landscapes, ideal for riders seeking ascents and descents. Trails often wind through wooded areas and open fields, providing a distinctive riding experience that combines historical industrial landscapes with natural beauty. You can explore technical singletracks like the Singletrack on Terril de Grenay, offering views of the mining basin.

Which bike parks offer challenging climbs and technical sections?

For challenging climbs and technical sections, consider exploring the terrils. Terril 46 of Verquigneul provides opportunities for ascents and descents, including a bitumen Cross Park. The Spoil heaps 74 and 74a are also known for great climbs and breathtaking views, offering a playground for mountain bikers with beautiful singletracks around the slag heaps.

Are there family-friendly biking options in Pas-de-Calais?

While specific 'family-friendly' categories aren't always explicitly listed for bike parks, pumptracks like those in Hersin-Coupigny are suitable for all ages and skill levels, making them a great family activity. Many trails on the terrils and Opal Coast also offer varying difficulty levels, allowing families to choose routes that match their abilities. Always check specific trail details for suitability.

What natural features and viewpoints can I expect to see while biking?

Biking in Pas-de-Calais offers diverse natural features and viewpoints. The terrils provide elevated positions with panoramic views of the mining basin and surrounding landscapes, such as from Terril de Drocourt or Terril de Grenay. The Opal Coast trails offer breathtaking coastal scenery, combining paths along beaches, through valleys, forests, and marshes.

What is the best time of year to visit Pas-de-Calais for mountain biking?

The best time for mountain biking in Pas-de-Calais is generally during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) months. During these periods, the weather is typically milder and more stable, with less rain and comfortable temperatures for outdoor activities. Summer can also be pleasant, but trails might be busier, and temperatures can be higher.

Are there facilities available at the bike parks?

Some locations offer specific facilities. For instance, the Cabiddu Park MTB Base is a dedicated MTB park with facilities. Pumptracks are often located near urban amenities. For specific details on showers, bike wash stations, or other services, it's best to check local information for each specific bike park or trail area.
